In den WarenkorbTrade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Text in English and Japanese. [6], 44 (with facing color illustrations), (9) pages. Glossary. Name in ink on title page. Slight cover wear. Format is approximately 7.25 inches by 10 inches. Includes Greetings from Shigefumi Matsuzasa, Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture. By the end of 1945, the atomic bombings of Japan had killed an estimated 140,000 people at Hiroshima and 74,000 at Nagasaki, including those who died from radiation poisoning. Often lost in those numbers are the experiences of the survivors, known as hibakusha (literally "atomic bomb-affected people"). Since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan has been a world leader in the anti-nuclear movement. This movement was also prompted in part by American hydrogen bomb tests in the Marshall Islands in 1954. During the Castle Bravo test, the largest ever conducted by the United States, fallout reached a Japanese fishing boat named Daigo Fukury Maru or "Fifth Lucky Dragon," located 80 miles east of the test site.…

In den Warenkorb4to, vii + 21 pp. Stapled pamphlet, on two different paper stocks (white and grey), front cover detached. Text clear and complete. Good, on aged paper, with crease to one corner of title-leaf. Title leaf printed, the rest mimeographed. Pp. v-vii consist of an appendix at the rear of the volume. Occult pseudo-science (the Society's logo is a pentacle), presaging the hippie 'retreat from reason' in the face of Cold War realities. Begins 'For ten years the Society of Metaphysicians has worked in the interests of human unity at all levels. Our statements are supported by this work and by the results of this work, by observation, calculation and fundamental law. | Now, as a Society, we are able to say emphatically that cataclysm has already begun, is with us now, is gathering its powers of destruction against mankind.' There will be an atomic conflagration, and there is 'no hope for humanity in general', and 'whether we shall, in fact, be able to rebuild as rapidly as [H. G. Wells] suggested, depends upon the magnitude of spiritual values to be found amongst us now'. The public are 'of an average mental age of 7-10 years'. 'Fortunately, many died from privation and disease [in the Second World War].' 'Organised Cooperation' ('group living, group experience and unified essential Brotherhood') is a 'spiritual duty'. The pamphlet is underpinned by a section of 'Supporting Evidence'. Scarce: the only copies of this first edition on COPAC at the legal deposit libraries. The Typed Letter Signed (4to, 1 p), in blue and red ink, urges Brook 'to publicise these important matters'. See Image. …

First appearance of these importent papers, the investigations recorded here gave an essentuial contribution to the development of the first atomic bomb and to the advancement of nuclear physics. In collaboration with his wife Irene, he discovered artificially induced radioactivity early in 1934 for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1935. The Joliot-Curies provided chemical evidence for transmutation ( the change of one element to another) with the change of aluminum into a previously unknown isotope (variety) of silicon. This led to the development of a new discipline - the production and study of radioisotopes (radioactive forms of elements), and their later investigations together with their collaborators unrolled the fission process as in the offered papers. …

In den WarenkorbVery good. Wear and toning along original fold lines. Verso repair to a fold intersection and a fold separation. Slight loss at a few fold intersections. Text and printed images on verso. Size 34.25 x 46.75 Inches. This is the chilling Atomic Bomb issue from the iconic World War II Newsmap series. Issued in 1945 as the 'Army Information Branch Newsmap of eastern China and Japan' shortly after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, one week before the Japanese announced their surrender to the Allies to end the Pacific War, World War II. Understanding the Map The map depicts the region from central China and Mongolia to Japan and from the Soviet Union to Taiwan (Formosa) and Hong Kong. Red areas highlight the regions controlled by the Chinese nationalists led by Chiang Kai-shek and the Soviet Union with the white illustrating the Japan's ever-dwindling empire. Thick red arrows illustrate the directions of advance by the Chinese south of Hankow (Hankou), the Soviet Red Army in Manchuria and Karafuto, and the U.S. Navy in the western Pacific near Japan itself. A photograph in the upper left corner presents Soviet troops in combat against the Japanese, on whom the Soviets declared war on August 8th. Mushroom Cloud: The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagaskai The photograph in the upper right corner has since become iconic and almost immediately recognizable as the mushroom cloud rising above Hiroshima following the atomic bombing of that city by the U.S. on August 6, 1945. The bottom photograph presents the deck guns of an American warship, although it is unclear which one, though it is likely a cruiser. Publication History and Census This map was created by the Army Information Branch and published on August 20, 1945. Ten examples are cataloged in OCLC and are part of the collections at Denison University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Davidson College, the Library of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, the University of Missouri Columbia, Wichita State University, the Denver Public Library and Texas A and M University.
