Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Book. 2 volumes (complete set, all published) in excellent condition of Tacha's formative artist's book. 12pp, 209mm square in printed coloured wraps (red & pink). Text in English, printed in black and white, illustrated with photographs. Edition of 500 copies. Heredity Study I features the artist's two parents & compares specific physical attributes with their two sons (for example feet, ears, noses). A series of photographic comparisons is followed by a quote from C.H.Waddington "Principles of Development and Differentiation", New York, 1967; and then two sections: " First Son" and "Second Son" listing and the physical attributes the sons have from either their Mother or Father. Heredity Study II is dedicated to the artist's parents, Constantin Tachas and Helen Malake, and her four Grandparents. The photographs (including front and back profiles of the artist naked) are intermixed with more substantial textual information, a more revealing Heredity Study: "The whole expression of my face is more like my f.'s when I am serious, but more like my m.'s when I smile and laugh. I have the sweetness and shyness of smile which comes from my mother's mother, and which both my m. and her sister have (my f.'s smile had similar characteristics but looked different). When I laugh, even my eyes take the expression of my m.'s and my nose bends downwards and wrinkles on either side of it's middle, like her family's (a definitely unpleasant feature coming from her father).". and continues "My feet, toes and toe-nails are almost exactly my f.'s: large toe slanted towards other toes.". Later in Heredity Study II there are two other sections of lists : "Other physical attributes" and finally 2pp "Intellectual and psychological characteristics". Quote: " Quick temper : from both my parents, but mainly from my m."."Becoming mentally and emotionally involved with things to an almost pathological degree : generally from my f.". There is a stylish tension between the Conceptualist structure and discipline of the project and the sense that there is something very personal beneath that scientific approach. It is perhaps interesting to note that while Germano Celant included Tacha in his Book As Artwork 1960/1972 exhibition this particular duo of publications were not included. Perhaps they were released near the end of 1972 and Celant was unaware of them. The personal conceptual rigour of the these works serve as an interesting postscript or dynamic in relation to Celant's theory of "informale caldo" and "informale freddo". …
