Born amidst change and opportunity, gifted with enterprise and administrative genius, he, like so many other Normans, found scope for his special talents in conquered England. King Henry I acknowledged his brilliance by making Roger chancellor, bishop, and, ultimately, second only to himself in authority and power-a veritable viceroy. For more than a generation thereafter he imaginatively and successfully governed the kingdom under Henry and his successor, King Stephen. Nevertheless, despite triumphs as churchman, politician, and viceroy, Bishop Roger died in disgrace ; Bookplate of George Peddy Cuttino (1914-1991), who taught at Emory for 32 years and was a distinguished and beloved professor and author. He was a two-time Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and he chaired the Emory history department in the early 1970's. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War I and worked for the U.S. Army Intelligence Service at the Pentagon during the Korean Conflict. He received a Bachelor's degree at Swarthmore College and a Master's degree at the University of Iowa. In 1938, he received a doctor of philosophy degree from Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He received the Emory Medal in 1982. ; FINE. Book.

Cuttino was also a Rhodes Scholar (1936-1939), a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow (1947-1948; 1953-1954), and a recipient of the Haskins Medal from the Medieval Academy of America (1979). Among other honors and honorary positions Cuttino held at Emory University are the Candler Chair in Medieval History (1980), and the position of Chief Marshal (1976-1984); Georges Duby, one of this century's great medieval historians, has brought to life with exceptional brilliance and imagination William Marshal, adviser to the Plantagenets, knight extraordinaire, the flower of chivalry.
