In The Museum as Muse, artists of many persuasions speak their minds about museums, their functions and spaces, their practices and politics, and their relationship to the art they contain. More than 60 artists are represented by a wide range of works: photographs of museum patrons by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliot Erwitt; 'personal museums' and 'cabinets of curiosities' by Charles Wilson Peale, Marcel Duchamp, and Claes Oldenburg; fantasies of the destruction or transformation of museums by Hubert Robert, Ed Ruscha, and Christo and more, including works created especially for this project by contemporary artists, and an anthology of statements and writings by artists about museums. This volume was published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including a 6 mm. tear to spine edge and bumping of upper edge of recto. Light yellowing of page edges. Contents otherwise clean and unmarked.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The field of optics has been accelerating at an unprecedented rate, due both to the tremendous growth of the field of fiber-optic communications, and to the improvement of optical materials and devices. Throughput capabilities of fiber systems are accelerating faster than Moore's law, the famous growth rate of silicon chip capability, which has propelled that industry relentlessly over decades. In addition, new optical storage techniques push the limits of information density, with an ever decreasing cost per bit of storage. Economic investment in photonics is at an all-time high. At the same time, other fields of optics, adaptive optics for instance, are bringing new capabilities to more classical applications such as astronomical imaging. New lasers continue to be developed, with applications in display, sensing, and biomedicine following at ever-shorter intervals after the initial discoveries. Given this background, the NATO Mediterranean Dialog Advanced Research Workshop on Unconventional Optical Elements for Information Storage, Processing and Communications, held in Israel on October 19-21, 1998, came at an opportune moment in the history of optics. Its aim was to overview the current state-of-the-art and encourage cooperation in the Mediterranean region, with a view to highlighting and enhancing the existing potential for further development and innovation. The workshop included participants from Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA.

Contemporary brown cloth boards backed in black calf. Blind bands and motifs on flat spine, worn. , A good example of this book of Jewish law or code. Reprinted from the 1874 Vilna edition. The Shulchan Aruch, sometimes dubbed in English as the Code of Jewish Law, is the most widely consulted of the various legal codes in Judaism. It was authored in Safed (today in Israel) by Yosef Karo (1488 ? 1575) in 1563 and is modeled after the Arba?ah Turim, composed some two centuries earlier by Rabbi Jacob ben Asher (c. 1270 ? 1340). Together with its commentaries, the Shulchan Aruch is the most widely accepted compilation of halakha, or Jewish law, ever written. The Orach Chaim (manner/way of life) is a division of this larger code, which may refer to either the Arba?ah Turim or the Shulchan Aruch. The Orach Chaim addresses aspects of Jewish law pertinent to the Hebrew calendar (be it the daily, weekly, monthly, or annual calendar), including laws of prayer, Synagogue, Sabbath, and holidays. , Size : 8vo. (210 x 140 mm), Text in Hebrew. Boards rubbed, spine worn with joints split. Hinges split. Some worming to spine. Approx. 10 leaves torn at fore edge, affecting text. Interior largely clean and crisp otherwise.
