Thomas, bought Dec 3rd 1917," alongside further historical pencil research notations to the rear endpapers. Reverend Charles Drayton Thomas (1867-1953) was a foundational leading member of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR), famed for his empirical studies into mental mediumship and survival after death. Crucially, the 1917 wartime acquisition date catches Thomas at the absolute peak of his psychical library expansion. Accompanied by the same early circular ink stamp bearing the acronym 'A.S.A.P.', denoting a direct link to an early psychical research fraternity or library collection. Condition Report: A candidate for restoration or archival boxing, presented in Poor condition externally, but with a remarkably clean core. The original cloth binding is heavily sunned, showing expected historical chipping, small tears, and minor loss to the top and tail of the spine; the cloth over the spine panel is currently split and half-detached. The rear board is completely detached, and the internal block shows a distinct structural crack between pages x and xi of the initial preface. Despite these external structural faults, the text block remains complete, and the individual internal pages are surprisingly bright, crisp, and completely unblemished throughout. The crucial folding plate is securely intact. A monumentally important work in the history of 19th-century alternative science and occult physics. Lacks folding plate/map #7 but otherwise complete. Maps ared neat and in general they appear unviewed with sound folds and crisp edges. Some with hand color added. Usual and expected light toning to the paperstock used for the maps. Contents and description page to the front pastedown. Light rubbing to cloth extremities of the case.
