Dedica di Francesco d'Asola, curatore dell'edizione, a Francesco Contarini, nella quale avverte di "aver aggiunto, ai commenti di Asconio Pediano a Cicerone, anche quelli di Vittorino al trattato De inventione e di Giorgio Trapezunzio all'orazione Pro Q. Ligario" (cfr. Cataldi Palau, Gian Francesco d'Asola e la Tipogr. aldina, p. 124). Prima edizione aldina di questi commenti alle Orazioni di Cicerone, importanti per la letteratura e la storia classica, contenendo notizie sulla costituzione del Senato, sulle assemblee del popolo e le corti di giustizia. Asconio Pediano, nativo di Padova, fu grammatico a Roma al tempo di Tiberio, amico di Virgilio e maestro di Tito Livio e di Quintiliano. Cercos de antigua humedad en el margen inferior de varias hojas, sin afectar al texto. * Primera edición aldina de los comentarios a los discursos de Cicerón, de clara vocación pedagógica, a cargo del paduano Asconius Pedianus. La primera edición de los comentarios de Asconius se publicó en Venecia en 1477, hubo otras dos en 1498 y 1519 y luego habría que esperar ya hasta 1553 para que una edición similar viera la luz, en este caso a cargo de Paulus Manutius, hijo de Aldus. Los comentarios de Asconius, que fueron encontrados en 1416 entre los manuscritos descubiertos por Poggio Bracciolini en el monasterio de Saint-Gall, se centran en siete discursos. La edición que presentamos apareció siete años después de la muerte de Aldus e incluye, al final, los comentarios de Jorge de Trebisonda a la Expositio in Orationem M. Tulii Ciceronis pro Q. Ligario de Marius Victorinus. Andrea Torresani de Asola, suegro de Aldus, se hizo cargo de la imprenta junto a sus hijos, es por ello que su nombre aparece en el colofón. A pesar de lo poco que conocemos acerca de la figura de Asconius Pedianus, los especialistas coinciden en señalar que los comentarios a los discursos de Cicerón parecen dirigidos a sus hijos, lo que corroboraría el propósito didáctico de la obra. Los adolescentes, destinatarios del texto, habrían recibido la toga virilis y pasado al tercer nivel de su educación, es decir, la retórica, y comenzado su práctica en la esfera pública.
