Friedrich Hofmeoster, Leipzig ; OCLC: 175109122 ; This distinctly German songbook was published by the physician Hans Breuer, who in 1904 as a medical student influenced by the then-popu…lar Wandervogel movement, began wandering the countryside in his free time gathering folk songs. By 1908 he had published the first set of these in Darmstadt as Der Zupfgeigenhansl, or "The Pick-Fiddle John". The publishing history of Der Zupfgeigenhansl is extremely convoluted, but in later editions, the collection usually contains about 260 songs and is divided into 16 themes: Parting -- Minnedienst, or Chivalry -- Love Plaints -- Ballads -- Sacred Songs -- Evensongs -- Joy -- Summer -- Journeying SOngs -- Sea Songs -- Parlor Songs -- Soldier's Songs -- Festive Songs -- Rural Songs -- Dance -- Rounds. A number of the songs in these later editions were gathered from song collecting i n the field, others were collected from older published sources, but the main source was the songbooks published by Böhme, as well as works by Herder, Zuccalmaglio's German Folksongs, and some from Das Knaben Wunderhorn by Brentano and Arnim, plus t he Deutschen Liederhort by Erk and Böhme.
