DJ has some tape repaired small tears. . . . . . . . FROM THE DUST JACKET FLAP: Full of froth and charm, this is an insider's report on Washington's power elite and the entertaining ways that help them maintain and expand that power. Lucy Moorhead is one of Washington's most renowned hostesses. In ENTERTAINING IN WASHINGTON, she gives an eyewitness account of the tactics and strategy of Washington parties. Her principals are those men and women who make - or bend - policy, who create the news and, directly or indirectly, affect our lives. Some are famous; others known only in the discreet circles of power. They include: * International hostess Pamela Harriman, former daughter-in-law of Winston Churchill and wife of elder statesman and diplomat extraordinary, Governor Averell Harriman. ---- * Rosalynn Carter, who presides over picnics on the lawn for 500, formal dinners that mix top diplomats and old Georgia friends, and intimate luncheons with a cool and effective skill. ---- * Katharine Graham, the daring publisher of Newsweek and The Washington Post, who was the first to break the Watergate scandal that eventually toppled an administration. ---- * Ardeshir Zahedi, glamorous Ambassador from Iran and former brother-in-law of the Shah.…

Interior clean. Inscribed to Susan and Neil Sheehan by Lippmann: "To Susan, Neil Sheehan / with all the best / W Lippmann / Aug 1970". Shelved in Room F. . Inscribed by Walter Lippmann to Susan and Neil Sheehan in August 1970. Lippmann was one of the most influential American journalists and political commentators of the twentieth century, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist whose work was deeply influential in shaping contemporary debates about democracy, the press, and US foreign policy. Early Writings, introduced and annotated by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., gathers Lippmann's formative essays from the Progressive Era and First World War period, when he was developing his core ideas about liberalism, public opinion, and democratic governance that would remain central to his later writings. The association with Neil and Susan Sheehan is particularly resonant. By 1970, Neil Sheehan had become one of the major American reporters on Vietnam, and within a year would be central to the New York Times publication of the Pentagon Papers; Susan Sheehan, meanwhile, was established as a New Yorker writer working in the tradition of documentary literary journalism. Lippmann's inscription links the Sheehans to an elder statesman of American journalism at a moment when questions central to Lippmann's oeuvre (the formation of public opinion, the limits of official knowledge, and the centrality of the press to democracy) were being tested during the US government's war in Vietnam. Second Story Books is honored to offer this item from the personal collection of Neil and Susan Sheehan. Neil Sheehan (1936-2021) and Susan Sheehan (born 1937) were a distinguished husband-and-wife team whose careers helped define American literary journalism in the second half of the twentieth century. Neil Sheehan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times, is best known for his role in bringing the Pentagon Papers to public attention and for his landmark book "A Bright Shining Lie", while Susan Sheehan built a parallel reputation as a leading voice at The New Yorker, crafting deeply reported narrative nonfiction on subjects ranging from mental health to social institutions, earning her own Pulitzer Prize in 1983. Their longstanding ties to major publications, particularly The New Yorker, placed them at the center of an influential cultural and intellectual network, and the books from their library carry added provenance through this close connection to the magazine's editorial and artistic community. 1413400.
