New Edition. 12 volumes; octavo (19.5cm.); publisher's blue paper-covered boards, orange printed spine labels, deckled edges; engraved portrait frontispiece in Vol. I. Boards a bit scuffed, a few volumes with shallow losses at spine ends, rear cover of Vol. XIII and upper cover of Vol. XII separated but present, contemporary ownership signature to front free endpapers torn or trimmed away in all but two volumes; still, quite a fresh and sturdy set of an early American edition of Johnson's complete works, uncommon thus. Spine labels allude to a larger "Classics" series, of which these are Volumes XXXIII-XLIV. FLEEMAN 87.3W/10; SHAW & SHOEMAKER 17840. Not noted in Courtney & Smith.
