Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. Second printing [stated]. [14], 340, [2] pages. Frontispiece. Illustrations. Index. DJ worn and torn. Inscribed by the author on the fep. Inscription reads: To Robin and Bruce with deep respect on your anniversary--to two who stand with us in the long struggle for the rights of the people Arthur Kinoy April 1984. Arthur Kinoy (September 20, 1920 - September 19, 2003), was an attorney and civil rights leader who helped defend Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. He served as a professor of law at the Rutgers School of Law-Newark from 1964 to 1999. He was one of the founders in 1966 of the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York City, and successfully argued a number of cases before the Supreme Court of the United States. He also founded the Public Interest Law Center of New Jersey. Kinoy took an active part in the defense of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg from 1951. They were convicted of atomic espionage and executed on June 19, 1953. Kinoy made the last appeal to try to save the Rosenbergs from execution. During the 1950s and 1960s, Kinoy represented persons called to hearings of the House Committee on Un-American Activities; in 1966 he was officially removed from a hearing by Senator Eastland, its chair, and subsequently convicted of disorderly conduct. In 1968, the U.S. Court of Appeals overturned the conviction. Kinoy was a founder of the Women's Rights Law Reporter, the first legal periodical to focus exclusively on women's rights. Kinoy also was the key founder of the Mass Party Organizing Committee, a coalition-based, electorally friendly attempt to create a socialist third party in the U. S. in the 1970s. Discusses issues surrounding such cases as Watergate, the Rosenbergs, the Civil Rights Movement, the Taft-Hartley Act, and the McCarthy Committee. Just about all the great battle of the mid-Twentieth century were part of Kinoy's practice. He participated in the last desperate attempt to halt the Rosenbergs' executions. He was involved in trials under the Smith Act, which threatened Americans' right to express their political beliefs. He took on government and big business in challenging the union-busting tactics of the Taft-Hartley Act. And at the height of the Cold War he protected artists and others against the witchhunting tactics of the McCarthy Committee. During the southern civil rights movement, Kinoy helped save Black men like Willie Seals from execution on trumped-up rape charges. He litigated landmark cases in support of the massive voter registration drives in Louisiana and Mississippi, and he carried the challenge of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic party to the floor of Congress. Among Kinoy's Supreme Court victories was reversing the exclusion of Representative Adam Clayton Powell from his seat in Congress. Another success was in overturning the convictions of anti-Vietnam War protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Kinoy's inside account of the Supreme Court case in which he thwarted the Nixon administration's attempt to subvert the Constitution through the use of illegal wiretapping offers an explosive new interpretation of the Watergate saga. Through all these cases, Kinoy has fashioned revolutionary new approaches to the theory and practice of people's law. Litigation becomes not an end in itself but an instrument for social change. Advancing the cause of those who are fighting for their rights--be they minorities, radicals, protesters, or union organizers--is just as important as wining a case. this living history shows how a people's lawyer finds the path to victory. It is a moving record of the lawyer at work in a hostile environment and an eloquent call for the aggressive defense of human rights. Signed.…
