In den WarenkorbThe front board of a small 8vo book bearing the bookplate of Arthur Charlett, who graduated from Trinity College Oxford and become Master of University College in 1692. Charlett assembled an extensive library and he is noted as the commissioner of the first bookpile bookplate to have been made in Britain (Franks 5614); it was de…signed by Samuel Pepys who was approached with the request by Charlett in 1698. * Samuel Pepys is best known for his "Diary" from 1660-1669, which included a vivid description of the great fire of London and the Black . He designed this bookplate, with books stacked around the owner's initials. (See British Museum, Franks Collection 5614- bookowners.online (slash) Arthur Charlett 1655-1722. A notation at the bottom states "One of the earliest Book plates of this design. Very few copies." A later owner named James Cassels has signed the top of the board. Period brown calf, pastedown somewhat browned at edges.
