Cover features B&W photo of one of Music Hall's most famous pairings, Wee Georgie Wood and his Stage mother, Dolly Harmer. From 1917 until their joint retirement in 1953, George and Dolly created an off and on-stage partnership that lasted for over 35 years. During this time they played throughout the British Empire, and topped the bills in every music hall and variety theatre in the land. They first performed together in 1917 in a stage play entitled 'Some Detective'. At this time Wee Georgie Wood was 20 and a major star in Music Hall. At 19, he was told that he would never grow any taller and, at 4'9" he remained the eternal schoolboy. George Wood spent most of his life loathing his 'Wee' Georgie Wood billing, however the title stuck, and he spent his adult life turning his disability into a very lucrative career. In over 40 sketches Dolly played George's mother Mrs Robinson in titles such as 'Thicker Than Water', 'Mrs Robinson & her Son', 'The Black Hand Gang' and 'Funny Go Round'. In all they performed over 40 different sketches, transferring their stage sketch into a film in 1930. Scarce.…

Noel Counihan (1913 -1986) Was An Australian Social Realist Painter, Printmaker, Cartoonist And Illustrator Active In The 1940S And 1950S In Melbourne. An Atheist, Communist, And Art Activist, Counihan Made Art In Response To The Politics And Social Hardships Of His Times. He Is Regarded As One Of Australia's Major Artists Of The 20Th Century. Counihan Was Born On 4 October 1913 In Albert Park, Then A Working-Class Suburb Of Melbourne. He Attended The St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne Choir School (Closed In 1929), Then Caulfield Grammar School In 1928. He Studied Part-Time Under Charles Wheeler At The National Gallery Of Victoria Art School In Melbourne During 1930-31, Where He Met The Social Realists Herbert Mcclintock And Roy Dalgarno. Social Realism, The Belief That Art Should Reflect The Realities Of Society Under Capitalism, Was The Artistic Doctrine Of The Communist Party Of Australia, And In 1931 Counihan Became A Confirmed Atheist And A Member Of The Party. He Helped Found The Workers Art Guild, And Began Printmaking, Producing Linocuts And Lithographs For Communist Magazine Covers And Pamphlets As Well As Designing Banners. During The Great Depression Counihan Participated In The "Free Speech" Fights In Brunswick, Organized By The Communist Party In Response To A Victorian State Government Law Banning "Subversive" Gatherings. Dozens Of Members Of The Unemployed Workers Movement Were Arrested, And Unemployed Meetings At The Intersection Of Phoenix Street And Sydney Road, Brunswick Were Dispersed By Police. As Part Of This Fight, A Young Counihan Addressed A Crowd From A Locked Cage On Top A Truck. Police Had To Cut Him Out, To The Jeers Of The Crowd, As He Continued Speaking. From 1934 Counihan Worked As A Cartoonist For Various Publications, Including The Bulletin And The Communist Party's Paper, The Guardian From 1945 To 1949 And Again From 1952 To 1958. He Spent Extended Periods In Hospital With Tuberculosis During The Second World War. With The Encouragement Of The Artist Yosl Bergner, He Began To Paint. He Developed A Personal Style Based On The Social Realist Approach, Producing Compassionate Images Of Workers And Their Working Lives. Counihan Maintained That The Artist Had A Duty To "Gather Information From The Political Developments Of The Time." His 1955 Painting On Parliament Steps Won The George Crouch Memorial Prize In 1956. Counihan Remained Loyal To The Communist Party During Its Various Splits And Despite Its Declining Support In The 1970S And 1980S. His 1973 Posthumous Portrait Of Hugh Gemmell Lamb-Smith - Who Had Taught Counihan At Caulfield Grammar And, As Well, Had Encouraged His Artistic Endeavors Whilst He Was There - Was Largely Painted From Memory. In 1979, Counihan Contributed The Entry On Footballer Roy Cazaly To Volume 7 Of The Australian Dictionary Of Biography. The Counihan Gallery, Managed By City Of Moreland Council, Is Named In His Honor. Two important, energetic and vivid letters by Agate, totalling 6 pp, 4to, defending Coward's play and his position on 'the intellectual and the popular', against the 'pseudo-intelligentsia' of the barristers Shearman and 'Jack' St John Hutchinson (1884-1942). As Item Two states below, Agate has instructed Dent to send the copies to Gye as he was present at his 'talk' with Shearman on 4 November, and because of Shearman's respect for his 'opinion in all matters of taste'. Good, on aged paper. ONE: Dent to Gye, 5 November 1931. 1 p, 4to. 'Mr. Agate has asked me to forward to you this copy of a letter which he has just posted to Mr. Shearman.' [.] That class if it really supported the theatre would have kept "Hamlet" on at the Queen's, and made it possible for Huxley's "World of Light" to run more than three weeks to empty houses. It would have flocked to see "The Venetian" and Jean Forbes-Robertson's Hedda Gabler.' Complains that he has 'stood up for these plays in print and in front of the microphone', and that there is 'no case of any first-class intellectual play' which he has 'condemned or neglected or failed to encourage. Now comes a popular play which I assess according to its merits as a popular entertainment, and Hutchy's lot have the impertinence to condemn this play on the plea that it does not belong to the intellectual drama which actually they do not support'. 'The Hutchy lot had it in their power to save the Phoenix Society [.] They took no interest, never went near it, and allowed it to die. [.] Yet you run down "Cavalcade" because you judge it by the standard of "Socrates" [by Clifford Bax], though the play which Hutchy actually professed to prefer was "Hamlet"! [.] I try to appraise the intellectual and the popular each in its class, [.] You told me the other day that you had the greatest respect for Ernest Gye's opinion in all matters of taste, and as he heard our talk last night I am sending him a copy of this'.
