His wife, artist Barbara Beecher (born 1925) boldly pencils "MARKED COPY / See Pg 11" near the top of the front wrapper. A typically fiery free verse Beecher production, this poem compares Barbara Fritchie's Civil War flag incident with the political situation of 1962, closing with: "Haul down the stars and stripes! Lg.4to., blue buckram with gilt lettering Arnoni, a Jew, was a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp and wanted to use his journal for alerting my fellow man to intellecutal and moral self-assertion. We must never sacrifice personal conscience to any external infallibility as he feels the Nazis did. **Laid in is a typed letter to Dr. M. Allen Greenwood, signed by Arnoni.
