On both sides of the card. In good condition, lightly aged. The recipient is not named. Reads: 'Dear Sir | I should like to see the [Sandwith?] portrait, & will take an early opportunity of calling at the Club. Perhaps, in case you are not there, you will kindly instruct the poert to shew it me when I call. The signature looks like H. [Sandwiths?] writing but he certainly wore moustache & whiskers from 1850 onwards.'.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. She apologises for the delay in writing, explaining: 'my hand has been dreadfully lame, & I have no secretary'. She explains that she has spoken to 'Mr. Craufurd' regarding the cottage, but that there is 'an old lady here, the widow of a farmer, a certain Mrs. Mead, who is supposed by Mr. Craufurd to have a prior claim'. She discusses whether Mrs Mead truly wants the cottage, and the possibility of making alterations to it, ending with remembrances to the recipient's father and mother.

An interesting letter regarding a celebrated Victorian scandal. In 1884 Frederic had come to England with his wife and five children as the London correspondent of the New York TImes. He set up a second household with Kate Lyon, with whom he had a further three children. Lyons was a Christian Scientist, and when Frederic suffered a stroke in 1898, she tried to cure him by faith healing, but he died. At the instigation of Mrs Frederic, Lyon was tried for manslaughter, but was acquitted. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, lightly-aged, with minor traces of two tissue mounts. She begins by stating that his letter has remained unanswered due to '[h]ealth which is not very strong and an unusual pressure of letters'. She is 'somewhat puzzled what to say', but while contributing five guineas, does not wish to be put on the committee of the fund 'for poor Mrs. Frederic & her children'. She concludes: 'I much admired some sides of Mr. Frederic's talent, but circumstances disclosed at the inquest were very painful, and my mind is so far from clear on the whole subject that I should prefer not to be on the Committee'. A postscript regarding the making out of the cheque for five guineas is in another hand. Loosely inserted is a slip of paper with a manuscript note (by Fisher?) regarding the author of the letter. From a batch of papers received by Fisher in connection with the fund.

See her entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, but with traces of grey paper and glue from mount adhering to the blank reverse. Folded once. In her neat controlled hand, with good firm signature, the letter reads: 'Dear Mr. Courtney / I shall be so grateful if you will put this in to the Telegraph, to morrow: / Yours sincerely / Mary A. Ward'.

See her entry in the Oxford DNB. Both letter and invitation have been repaired with archival tape after being torn in half; otherwise in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: Letter of 11 March 1904. 2pp, 12mo. She has 'heard from Mr. Tierny' that Miss Parker and her sisters 'have very kindly offered to sing in the Anthem on the occasion of my daughter's wedding. It is most kind of you to give your time in this way, and we are sure that the music will be a very great addition to the service.' She hopes that the sisters will see her 'in the Library after the service'. Newspaper cutting of report of the wedding of George Macaulay Trevelyan to Janet Penrose Ward, from the Star, 22 March 1904, stating that Mrs Humphry Ward's novel 'Robert Elsmere' has 'given her a reputation that somewhat overshadows the high literary distinction of her husband'. TWO: Invitation to the wedding, printed in copperplate in the conventional fashion, and filled in for 'The Misses Parker's'. 2pp, 12mo. On card bifolium. The invitation is on the recto of the first leaf, and the recto of the second carries an announcement regarding 'A SPECIAL TRAIN' laid on from Paddington.

Mary Augusta Ward, née Arnold, (1851-1920) was a preeminent Victorian and Edwardian novelist who wrote under her married name as Mrs Humphry Ward. Her uncle was the poet Matthew Arnold. Ward's novels contained strong religious subject matter relevant to Victorian values. She was popular in the United States as well as Britain. Her book Lady Rose's Daughter was the best-selling novel in the United States in 1903, as was The Marriage of William Ashe in 1905. Ward's most popular novel was the religious "novel with a purpose" Robert Elsmere. Sir George Tressady was her 7th novel. It was originally published as a serial from 1895 to 1896. This is the FIRST TRADE EDITION and is a PRESENTATION COPY inscribed to the author's younger sister "E.M. Arnold with the writer's love." Ethel Margaret Arnold planned a stage career and had literary ambitions, later becoming known as a "New Woman Journalist." Her relationship with Ward was difficult, but she served as the model for Alice, the heroine's mentally unstable 'manic sister', in Eleanor (1900). This novel is somewhat of a sequel to Marcella as its heroine is a central character in this novel as the married Lady Maxwell. Tressady, the title character is a married baronet who falls in love with Marcella. Octasvo. Original green cloth boards with gilt title to spine and black title to front board. Joints are tender, spine is rubbed and worn, and corners are bumped. There are a few small dark spots to the rear board. There is minor browning to the endpapers, else the interior is clean. 571 pages plus ads. LIT/030306. Signed.
