The building Provianthuset began in 1603 as part of the modern naval harbour that King Christian IV planned immediately after his Coronation in 1596. From his Coronation until 1611 the young King accomplished the biggest naval rearmament in the history of Denmark. The story of the decoration of the Provianthus begins in 1990, when the National Arts Foundation invited the visual artist Rylander to submit proposals for an artistic decoration of the foyer and the north lobby on the ground floor of Christian IVÆs old building. The decoration stands as a major work for Rylander, who has spent more than ten years conceiving and completing this surreal, figurative exciting, contemporary project in this historic building., English/ Danish, Year2004, Illust.
