Scarce; the author's first book - he had for the preceding two years contributed a 'Paris letter' to 'Men Only' magazine under the nom-de-plume of 'Jean Qui Rit'. The 'City of Light' that he evokes here is the centre of culture and cuisine that one would expect from the French capital, but on the eve of a much darker period in its history - with the Second World War around the corner, so that the 'Today' of the book's title also stands in stark contrast to its 'tomorrow', as well as its 'yesterday'. It was the War that brought a close to Arkell's leisurely existence across the Channel: as his obituary in The Independent records, '[w]hen the war broke out, Arkell tried to escape from Paris on a bicycle, but was apprehended by the Germans and interned for four years in the barracks at Saint-Denis, from the top floor of which he could see the "not very evocative Eiffel Tower"' - following its liberation, he returned to England.
