FIRST EDITION. Small 4to. (20 x 12 cm). pp. xvi+143. Contemporary green pebbled cloth with paper label to spine. Ownership inscription of 'R. P. Hardie' to front flyleaf. Some ink stains to boards, label browned and damaged; binding slightly sprung. Generally very good. Aristotle's 'Posterior Analytics' is a treatise on scientific demonstration and knowledge, part of the Organon, in which he sets out the conditions under which a syllogism can produce genuine scientific knowledge rather than merely probable or dialectical conclusions. It examines the nature of demonstrative proof, definition, and first principles, arguing that all demonstration must ultimately rest on premises that are themselves true, primary, and known immediately rather than derived. This copy is inscribed by Robert Purves Hardie (18641942), a Scottish philosopher, mathematician, and translator, best known for his translation of Aristotle's Physics in the Oxford translation of Aristotle's works. He was also a founding member of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.
