El libro se compone de 21 aportaciones debidas a otros tantos especialistas de universidades de Europa y América y se organiza en cuatro partes dedicadas sucesivamente a: 1. planteamientos historiográficos; 2. comparaciones y circulaciones de mujeres entre la península Ibérica y América; 3. la península Ibérica; 4. las Américas, con estudios tanto sobre el Brasil portugués como territorios de la América española como Charcas, o acerca de la influencia o relación de las experiencias ibéricas en zonas de la América inglesa, como Virginia; y 5. la India portuguesa.Las perspectivas adoptadas combinan la macro y la microhistoria, lo que permite multitud de análisis con detalle que abren la puerta a una percepción más fina y cuidadosa de las trayectorias vitales de estas mujeres, lo que contribuye a evitarplanteamientos simplistas o de trazo grueso. Una de las principales virtudes de este libro es el de la multiplicación de las fuentes históricas utilizadas, procedentes de un gran número de archivos americanos y europeos, aparte del recurso a las fuentes jurídicas.También se plantea el problema de la explotación desde una perspectiva histórica de las fuentes literarias y su relación con las fuentes documentales.Por su temática, y lo ambicioso de la propuesta acerca de la historia de las mujeres y la esclavitud, pensamos que este libro está llamado a convertirse en referente para este campo de estudios.
