Contemporary mottled full calf, gilt spine with raised band and red label, red edges, slight crack in front hinge. Fine copy. Third edition of this popular guide book to the surroundings of Paris. The first came in 1755 and at least six editions were published, the last in 1780. The frontispiece is engraved by Huquir jr. Antoine-Nicolas Dezallier d'Argenville (1723?96), not to mix up with the father Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville (1680-1765) who collaborated with Diderot on the Encyclopédie. It?s a connoiseur's guide to the chief artistic and architectural monuments of the surroundings of Paris, Versailles, Trianon, S. Germain etc., in which the author especially pays a tribute to the triumphs of gardening. Hardcover / Hardback.

Reliure de l'époque, Nouvelle édition enrichie de Figures dessinées d'après nature. La Conchyliologie de Dezallier d'Argenville est sans doute l'un des ouvrages les plus célèbres sur ce sujet et témoigne, peu de temps après la mode lancée par Gersaint et son Catalogue raisonné des coquilles paru en 1736, de l'énorme vogue de l'histoire naturelle chez les amateurs dans l'Europe du XVIIIe siècle. La première édition parait anonymement en 1742 avec une première partie sur la lithologie. L'ouvrage connaîtra un immense succès en grande partie dû à la qualité des planches. C'est François Boucher qui donne le dessin préparatoire pour le frontispice gravé par Chedel, repris dans cette deuxième édition qui parait douze ans plus tard en 1757 sous un titre modifié. Elle renferme deux parties : la Conchyliologie avec l'appendice et 3 nouvelles planches de coquilles rares qui ne figurent pas dans tous les exemplaires et la Zoomorphose. Dezallier d'Argenville décrit au chapitre 10 les plus fameux cabinets de l'Europe touchant l'Histoire Naturelle, dont le sien et celui des collectionneurs aux dépens desquels il fit dessiner et graver les planches. Signalons que d'après l'édition de 1742, on trouvait à Paris 17 cabinets d'histoire naturelle. Cette seconde édition en dénombre 20. Dix ans plus tard la Conchyliologie portative en énumérera 50 et d'après Krzysztof Pomian on en relève 135 dans l'édition de 1780. Mors supérieur fendu, 2 fenêtres découpées dans la page de titre.
