Il 31 luglio 1954 Achille Compagnoni e Lino Lacedelli piantarono il tricolore sulla vetta del K 2. Un anno dopo la conquista dell'Everest, una spedizione tutta italiana conquistava la seconda vetta del pianeta, al termine di una straordinaria impresa alpinistica. Fu un'impresa memorabile, a causa delle difficoltà logistiche, delle scarse conoscenze geografiche e meteorologiche, delle difficoltà tecniche. Con una organizzazione impeccabile, l'uso delle tecnologie più avanzate dell'epoca e un travolgente spirito d'avventura, la spedizione guidata da Ardito Desio riuscì a raggiungere il suo obiettivo.
