Fotografie
Zustand: Good. Adelaide, Stump & Co. (credited in the negative), [circa 1896]. A vintage gelatin silver photograph (143 × 100 mm, on the original mount (unevenly trimmed on all four sides to approximately 195 × 168 mm). Mount lightly stained in the bottom margin; photograph with a few fine cracks to the emulsion, with a tiny spot of loss to one cheek; in good condition. The bottom margin of the mount is inscribed 'Yours faithfully, A. Watson. Oct. 1896'. Archibald Watson was an 'erratic, histrionic genius', as his entry in the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' proceeds to demonstrate. 'Appointed Elder professor of anatomy at the University of Adelaide in 1885, Watson also became lecturer in pathological anatomy (1887-1903) and in operative surgery (1887-1919). Most of his . surgical notebooks have been preserved. Probably Australia's most precious surgical literary artefact, the notebooks cover the period 1883-1937 and record operations and post-mortems performed in Australia, England, the United States of America, South Africa (while consultant surgeon, Natal Field Force, during the South African War) and in Egypt and Greece (while consultant pathologist with the rank of major, 1st Australian Stationary Hospital in 1915-16). He visited China, South America, Japan, Russia and New Zealand where he usually watched leading surgeons operate . [He] flouted convention and dressed in an old canvas coat. Short, bearded and bespectacled, he spoke six languages and had a firm voice, acid wit and racy vocabulary . Having sold the properties he inherited, he lived in boarding houses, at clubs - he belonged to the Athenaeum, Melbourne - or with friends . He recorded details of his paramours in his personal diaries: he entered the names in Greek, his sexual experiences in Fijian and his actions often in variations of a coloured Maltese cross. Watson spent much of his last four years on Thursday Island, studying the Aborigines and collecting marine specimens'. Accordingly, this portrait depicting a genial and dapper gentleman would appear to be exceptional, by virtue of displaying almost none of these characteristics.

Fotografie
Zustand: Very Good. [Adelaide, Stump & Co., circa 1900]. A gelatin silver photograph (191 × 132 mm), on the original mount (unevenly trimmed on all four sides to approximately 233 × 178 mm). The mount has some light marginal tidemarks, and a bump to one bottom corner; the photograph is a little unevenly discoloured near the bottom edge, with some letters in the last word of the inscription a little indistinct; a few small marks to the surface, clear of the image proper; overall, in very good condition. An example of this photograph is in one of the University of Adelaide's special collections, where it is credited to Stump & Co., and given the date 1910. However, Watson appears in uniform as consultant surgeon in the Natal Field Force during the Boer War. Our example of the photograph is inscribed and signed 'To Mrs Chas Rasp. Far away, but not forgotten, A. Watson. 10.III.08'. Watson has further inscribed the verso of the mount to Mrs Rasp with some lines of verse (a truncated version of a sentimental poem entitled 'A Woman', reprinted from the 'Pall Mall Budget' by the Rockhampton 'Morning Bulletin' on Wednesday 1 August 1894. Thank you yet again, Trove!). Each of the five lines was cropped by a word or two when the mount was cut down. Agnes Maria Louise Rasp (née Klevesahl, 1857-1936) was the wife of Broken Hill mining pioneer Charles Rasp and a fixture of Adelaide's social scene. Watson appears to have been intimate with the Rasps for many years, and for some time lived with them in 'Willyama', their house in Medindie (see 'The Sydney Morning Herald', 17 September 1938). Charles Rasp died in May 1907. The 'Society Gossip' column in the Adelaide 'Critic' (Wednesday 18 March 1908) reported that 'Mrs Rasp and her sister, Miss Klevesahl, leave Adelaide by the "Bremen" on March 27' for an extended trip to Europe; perhaps this recently inscribed photograph travelled with her. Its existence should result in some rewriting of some aspects of accounts of their personal history. Watson was an 'erratic, histrionic genius', as his entry in the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' will quickly prove. 'Appointed Elder professor of anatomy at the University of Adelaide in 1885, Watson also became lecturer in pathological anatomy (1887-1903) and in operative surgery (1887-1919).
