Zustand: Very Good. Offering this over-200-year-old copy of "Description of the Arteries of the Human Body." Reduced to Tables. By Adolphus Murray, M.D., translated from the original {Latin] by Archibald Scott. Philadelphia: James Webster, 1816, early American edition. Full leather original leather with red label and stamped gilt on spine, hand sewn binding. No illustrations as published. An additional feature is the provenance, showing the journey of this book over a couple of centuries. On the title page is handwritten in period ink, Dr. Lincoln - from Wm [William] Loomis (or something close to that) - probably a professional gift during that time, around 1816. Inside the front pastedown are two bookplates showing the next owners. One is a plate with the name John P. Sheahan, which includes the handwritten number 135. Sheahan can be identified as John Parris Sheahan (1842-1894), a decorated Civil War officer and POW survivor, physician, and dentist. Records show that Sheahan's personal collection of historic medical books was meticulously organized, this book catalogued as volume #135. On the other bookplate with the detailed nature scene (see picture) are the names Arthur and Eileen Otis, placing this book into the personal collection of these two WWII civilian research scientists. Arthur outlived his wife and died in Gainesville, Florida in 2008 - where I acquired this book. Overall condition is Very Good. The cover is rubbed and bumped, the hinges starting but holding well. The endpapers are cracked revealing the threads which are holding securely. The first several pages are dampstained but legible, the remaining pages age-toned, unmarked, and well attached to the binding. A nice copy, ready to be catalogued into the next medical book collection! [A3].…
