A good copy of the third edition of this important manual for Jesuit superiors. Cardinal Claudio Aquaviva (1543-1615) is one of the major figures of the Counter-Reformation and among those responsible for the Jesuits' enormous theological and political success in the C17. After a swift career in the echelons of the Jesuit Order, from the 1580s he devoted himself to the writing of works concerned with the education of Jesuit priests and the characteristics necessary to become good Superiors. First published in Rome in 1606, 'Instructio' was based on one of several letters he wrote to Superiors of the Congregation 'to offercounsels and directions to enable them to be of greater help to their subjects in their interior life' (Guibert, 'Jesuits', 243). It lays down general guidelines seeking to 'increase and confirm the soul of the Society', focusing on the Superiors' demeanour, the role of prayer and serious mistakes made by them in their daily pastoral care, e.g., ignoring the spiritual 'illnesses' of their subjects and encouraging spiritual lassitude. Among the advice given so as to maintain and improve the spirituality of the Order was the use of Ignatius's spiritual exercises, oration and meditation. Aquaviva's advice to Superiors was integral to the shaping of the Congregation in the epoch of its Golden Age. BM STC It. C17, p. 43; Sommervogel I, 258.4. Small octavo (16cm.); 19th-century paste-paper boards, manuscript spine label, all edges stained red; mixed pagination (all titles collated complete); Jesuit device on title pages of first two titles, woodcut initials throughout. Ex-library (institution unknown) with spine call number crudely painted over, brief internal markings, boards quite scuffed with exposure along margins, spine label toned, late 19th- or early 20th-century ownership rubberstamp of a Rev. H.J. Heuser of Overbrook, PA, presumably with his pencil and occasional ink marginalia throughout, most notably on final free endpaper. Overall Good to Very Good, internally sound. Contents also include two short Jesuit pieces without title pages: "Ordinatio pro Studiis Superioribus" by Francisco Piccolomineo (1651) and "Regulae Patris qui Congregationi B. Virginis Praest.".

J.J. De la Torre was the editor of this splendid publication (dixit De Backer Sommervogel vol. V col.78-79). The text is in Latin and Spanish, printed on opposite pages. This publication contains also extracts from the diary of Ignatius published here for the first time.

El 2º libro falta en el British Museum. "Claudio Aquaviva General de los jesuitas, hijo del príncipe D. Juan, duque de Atri, y de Isabel Espinelli. En 1567 entró en la Compañía de Jesús, en la cual fue profesor de filosofía, luego Rector del Seminario romano, y más tarde Provincial de Nápoles y de Roma. El año 1581 fue nombrado General de la Orden, aunque solo tenía treinta y siete años de edad y trece de religión. Dotado de eminentes cualidades que deben adornar a un superior, trabajó con gran celo por asegurar y aumentar la influencia de la Compañía, tanto en su organización interior como en las diversas naciones cristianas; a fin del año 1584 nombró una comisión compuesta de siete Padres de diferentes naciones encargadas de redactar un plan de estudios para toda la Compañía. El resultado fue la obra famosa Ratio studiorum, que fue prohibida por la Inquisición, y no muy bien vista por algunos jesuitas que no querían sujetarse a sus opiniones. Esta obra se reimprimió en 1591, pero muy mutilada. Aquaviva envió comisionados a las islas de Chio y de Candía, a Inglaterra, Hungría, Moldavia y Sajonia, y dirigió muchas circulares y varias instrucciones utilísimas para el buen gobierno del instituto. En una palabra, gracias a su actividad y prudentes medidas, al fin de su generalato, de treinta y cuatro años, la Orden de los jesuitas contaba trece mil miembros, quinientas cincuenta casas y trece provincias. Por esto Aquaviva fue considerado como uno de los Generales de la Orden que mostraron más sabiduría durante su administración. La Compañía de Jesús, dice D'Alembert, debe a Aquaviva la sabia organización que se puede llamar la obra maestra del espíritu humano en el terreno de la política, y que conserva hace tantos años la grandeza y la gloria de esta Orden.
