Many artworks reproduced, including works by Grace Digby, Cedric Morris and many works by visionary artist Frederick Carter, who also supplies the illustrated article 'Dragon of the Alchemists'. Carter had illustrated D.H. Lawrence's Apocalypse, and was known as a mystic symbolist artist whose circle included Aleister Crowley and Austin Osmond Spare, the latter of which he had developed theories of artistic automatism. The leading feature is by author, feminist, and mystic Alice Mary Buckton on 'The Holy Grail: The Bringer of Vision'. Other articles include 'The Bible as Literature: Six Significant Books' by Richard G. Moulton, 'Hints on Hymn-Tunes' by R.E. Roberts, 'Short Studies in Musical Appreciation' by Frederick Nicholls, 'The Music of H.V. Jervis-Read' by G.H. FitzSimons, 'Spiritual Health and Eugenics' by Ernest S. Thomas, C. Harry Brooks' 'Cultivating Courage' and M. Michalis' 'Autosuggestion and the Recuperative Powers of the Body' deal with esoteric and therapeutic mind-power exercises, and poems 'The Ballad of Starlight' by Dorothy Una Ratcliffe and 'A Vision of Africa' by Arthur Shearly Cripps. The first fifteen volumes of plays from the Bankside Shakespeare, compiled and edited by the American scholar James Appleton Morgan, best known as Appleton Morgan (1845-1928), between 1888 and 1906. Morgan uses the texts which were given to the players, printed in parallel with the first revised folio text, the Heminges and Condell Text of 1623. Each volume includes enlightening critical introductions by various authors, who analyse the text and provide historical context for the development of each play. A neat little collection of wartime (and immediately following) pamphlets intended to familiarize Westerners with the culture, socio-political systems, religions, wildlife, and economic influence of Burma. Penned by a variety of mostly British experts in various aspects of Burmese society they veer between being earnest and informative when discussing wildlife and natural history, and containing more than a fading echo of British Imperialist opinions and beliefs. A difficult series to complete; these copies in quite lovely condition.
