Ich glaube indessen nicht, daß diese Berührung ein Zufall war. Ein Buch, das ich über das Problem der Zeit geschrieben hatte, war eben erschienen ( 1941 ) und ich sprach mit einigen Menschen über seinen Inhalt. Im Laufe der Diskussion sagte einer von ihnen: Ihren Gedanken, daß unser irdisches Leben nach dem Tode noch einmal in seiner Gesamtheit und als wirkliche Erfahrung erlebt wird, vertritt auch Rudolf Steiner. Ich fragte: Wer ist Rudolf Steiner? Es dauerte nicht lange und ich hatte es herausgefunden und begann seine Werke zu studieren. Ich entdeckte voller Erstaunen, daß das, was ich als eine Hypothese erarbeitet hatte, Rudolf Steiner als unmittelbare Geist-Wahrnehmung bekannt war und zu weit höheren Stufen des Erkennens führte, als es jemals durch eine Hypothese möglich ist. Diese erstaunliche Feststellung machte mich zu einem überzeugten Anhänger der Anthroposophie. Ich konnte nicht verstehen, daß ich trotz eines Universitätsstudiums und meiner großen Belesenheit auf vielen Gebieten noch nie von diesem außerordentlichen Mann und seinem Werk gehört hatte. Ungefähr zwei Jahre später diskutierte ich mein Buch mit dem nun verstorbenen Erzbischof William Temple, der so freundlich gewesen war, ein Vorwort dafür zu schreiben. Ich erzählte ihm, daß es durch Steiners Lehre eine Bestätigung erfahren hätte. Er zeigte sich hierfür sehr interessiert und sagte zu mir: Wissen Sie, man hat mir schon wiederholt geraten, Steiner unbedingt zu lesen. Und jetzt will ich endlich damit anfangen. Ein Jahr später begegnete ich ihm wieder und er sagte: Jetzt will ich aber wirklich mit Steiner beginnen. Leider starb er kurz darauf. -- Das erschien mir unbegreiflich. William Temple war einer der gebildetsten und kenntnisreichsten Köpfe seiner Zeit. Er beherrschte die deutsche Sprache. Er hatte von Steiner gehört. Dennoch hatte er Steiners Lehre nicht kennengelernt. So war es überall. Außer den wenigen Anhängern der Anthroposophie fand ich niemanden unter den gebildeten Menschen meiner Bekanntschaft, der etwas über Steiner wußte. Ich selbst hatte eine oder zwei Kritiken über ihn gelesen. Der Kritiker hatte bestenfalls ein einziges Buch von ihm gelesen ohne zu begreifen, was es bedeutete. -- Erschüttert stellte ich fest, daß eine Mauer, besonders im englischen Volk, das Denken abriegelte.
