4 parts in 1 volume. Rare collection of devotional, educational and moralistic "minor texts", published in similar combinations since the 1400s, but here with additions written as late as 1513. Editions printed in Spain were edited by Antonio de Nebrija (1441-1522), the greatest Spanish humanist of his generation. This is his second edition: the first, also printed by his sons, appeared in 1534. It includes some of the most popular and influential school texts of early humanist education in Europe. After a dedication to Juan de Fonseca (1451-1524), Archbishop of Rosano, follow Cato's Disticha, moralistic verses intended as a school book for learning Latin, with Nebrija's annotations; a spurious work of Saint Bernard de Clairvaux, Scorn for the world, with an appended work on table manners for boys by Giovanni Sulpizio (ca. 1430-ca. 1495?); another spurious work of Saint Bernard, The five keys to wisdom; and finally Aesop's fables in Latin verse (60 fables in 3 books), with a Latin poem by Pieter Gillis or Petrus Aegidius (1486-1533) that had first been published in Dorpius's 1513 Louvain edition of Aesop's fables:With some 16th- and/or early 17th-century manuscript notes in Spanish and Latin; and a 20th-century library stamp of the Capucins at Toulouse in the margin of the second leaf. Lacking leaf a10, which contained only the woodcut printer's device of Sancho and Sebastián Nebrija. The first quire with the outside edge of the woodcut border on the title-page and the heads of several leaves shaved, with the loss of running heads on 3 pages, small wormholes in first 3 leaves (affecting 1 word in the title and a few in the text) and in the gutter margin of the last 3 leaves, a few tears (some clumsily repaired), first title-page and a few leaves stained. Binding stained. With some manuscript notes; and a library stamp of the Capucins at Toulouse in the margin of the second leaf. With leaves cut short affecting some captions, one first line of the first part and the right-hand woodcut border of the first title, a few tears clumsily repaired, first title-page and leaves stained, and a wormhole in first 3 leaves. Binding stained. Good copy.l Palau 50365 (only the first 10 leaves.), 81838. 17th century limp sheepskin parchment (ca. 1652), stitched, with manuscript spine title, [Cato,] Disticha moralia cum an[n]otat[ione]b[us], and 2 leaves from a 1652 Leiden edition of Marcus Minucius Felix as endpapers.
