A long and interesting letter, regarding student unrest in the French revolution, and involving a descision taken by the 'Classe des Sciences et Artes de l'Institut, qui acorde un jour de prolongation aux Concurrens pour les prix de Peinture', and the attempts of the Institut National to impose discipline. Renou states that he has been unable to put into execution the various orders 'de la Classe de lettres et Arts de 'Institut', being uncertain whether 'cet illustre Corps [.] eut effectivement le droit d'intimer des Ordres a l'Ecole sur les objets de discipline'. He gives a long extract from a letter he has written on the subject to the Minister of the Interior Pierre Bénézech, including the following: 'Je regarde la religieuse Observation de la hierarchie des pouvoirs comme Le Palladium de l'ordre et de la liberté'. He then gives a full transcription of Bénézech's reply, ending 'je vous autorise, Pour cette fois Seulement et Sans tirer à consquence pour l'Avenir à lever les Scellés, qui sont sur leurs Tableaux, et à les laisser y retoucher pendant un jour'. After this Renou gives a long justification of his actions, beginning: 'D'apres ce compte rendu de ma conduite, aussi franc que bénévole, J'espere que l'Institut m'estimera de m'etre eclairé sur mes devoirs et de les avoir remplis. | Les Professeurs, par leurs lumieres, leur zele à s'acquitter de leurs fonction et leur Surveillance paternelle m'eritent la Confiance des Eleves, et celle de l'Institut.'.…
