The first thus of this interesting limited edition translation of a Franciscan Friar's appeal to the women of France about their dress, translated into English by William Rooke. The first edition thus, being the first edition of this translation. A limited edition work, with two-hundred and seventy-five small paper copies, and seventy-five large paper copies printed. This copy is one of the small paper editions. With the original glassine wrap. This work is addressed to the women and maidens of France, and discussed their costumes and dress in relation to morality and religion. The work was originally printed in Paris in 1585. Originally written in French by Antoine Estienne, a Franciscan Friar. Translated into English by William Rooke. In the original publisher's paper wraps with the original glassine wrap. Externally, smart. A few spots to the wraps. Some light marks and discolouration to the wrap. Small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine of the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.

In-8°, 15 x 9,5 cm, engraved frontispiece ( Mary with a burning heart)*** + title printed in red and black + (14)nn pp + 423 pp + (1)(colophon) (complete) , bound in somewhat later full vellum, vellum painted black, edges painted red. (black colour a bit worn off). Small library stamp on title. Still a very fine copy. Rare edition of a french provincial press. The first edition in French of this text was published in Paris in 1587. It carried a preface letter by Father Antoine Estienne. In this Arras edition this preface has been replaced by a letter of the bookdealer. The French translation was based on the 1548 paraphrased Latin edition by Laurentius Surius published in Cologne ( according the Catholic Encyclopedia). Our edition also has the '' Apologia pro Thaulero'' by Louis de Blois. USTC 19372 ; Pettegree-Walsby 28904. *** This portrait may be an old addition to the book.
