Appended are several personal notes and missives, making the work especially useful to both the historian and general reader.Francois de Joyeuse was born in Car…cassonne, the second son to Guillaume de Joyeuse and Marie Eleanor de Batarnay. His elder brother held some influence with King Henry II, who made him a Duke in 1581. In that same year he became Archbishop of Narbonne, despite being only 19.He inherited the Dukedom of Joyeuse in 1587, after the death of his brother at the head of the Catholic army at the Battle of Coutras. Later he supported the enemy commander, then Henry IV, and was heavily involved in the politics conducted between the Holy See and the French crown. This was the personal copy of Algernon Capell, Earl of Essex, and contains his bookplate to the reverse of the title page. Dated 1701 In full mottled calf with gilt detailing to the spine. Externally sound with general shelfware and light marks of handling. The spine is a little rubbed and the spine label is missing. There are light tidemarks to the boards near the joints. The joints themselves are starting but firm. There is a bookplate and a brief numerical ink inscription to the front pastedown, which has offset. Internally lightly foxed but remains remarkably clean for its age. Firmly bound. Very Good. None (illustrator). book.

Les négociations qui aboutirent aux traités de Westphalie en octobre 1648, virent l'émergence d'une titulature concurrente à celle de Majesté Impériale pour affirmer la prééminence du royaume très-chrétien. De cette époque date l'expression "Majesté royale". Louis XIII était considéré comme l'élu, dépositaire de l'ultima translatio des prophéties de Daniel et qui devait recueillir la souveraineté universelle et la remettre au Christ ressuscité. Cette vision millénariste eut un regain de vitalité dans les années 1650 , notamment en Angleterre où Cromwell se réclamait être comme le champion contre l'Antéchrist. Le texte d'Aubéry, daté de 1649, plus qu'une revendication du trône impérial, témoigne de l'affirmation de ce messianisme politique et de sa perpétuation en la personne de Louis XIV. Le résumé en latin qui est relié à la suite du texte en français, se termine par ces termes : "Delphino Franciae, ex matrimonio Regis Ludovici XIV et Reginae Mariae Teresiae nato, promittunt omnes rerum circumstantiae infallibiliter futurum Imperium totius maris et totius terrae & consequenter Monarchiam Universalem " [Au Dauphin de France, né du mariage du Roi Louis XIV et de la Reine Marie-Thérèse, ont été promises infailliblement et en toutes circonstances, l'empire futur de toutes les mers et toutes les terres , c'est-à-dire la Monarchie universelle. ] Ces affirmations eurent le don d'exaspérer le Pape que le gouvernement français calma en plaçant pour un temps Aubéry à la Bastille.
