In den Warenkorb4pp., 8vo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, disbound, with evidence of side stitching and damage at foot of spine. Taking as his text a speech by Brougham 'vainly opposing the third reading of the Factories Bill, (1844)', Hardcastle gives his own view, concluding: 'It is scarcely too much to say that the step gained by the passing of Married Women's Property Act (1870) would be more than retraced; and a new force would be given to the argument urged against extending the suffrage to women, - that persons too helpless to be trusted to dispose of their own labour, cannot be trusted to make laws for the Empire.' Three copies on COPAC.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Wraps. 6 typed 10 by 8 sheets printed recto only stapled at top corner. Includes a copy of a two page letter dedicating this piece to Corvine publisher Cecil Woolf: ".even so trivial item as this may have some marginal interest. I forward the carbon copy which you are welcome to retain." A piece of critical writing on Corvo (appears to be unpublished ) with interesting background about Rolfe and Venice mentioning at some length Thomas Mann's Death in Venice published in 1913 the year of Corvo's death, mention of Aschebach and the beautiful boy with comparisons, also the poems of Giorgio Baffo the licentious Venetian poet with a few passing remarks , not particularly amiable , about A J A Symon's mythologising of Rolfe in his 'Quest for Corvo.' Reid emphasises just how financially poor, Rolfe would've been in the winter that he wrote these letters in Venice. An interesting and rare piece, possibly unique, unknown to worldcat or the World Wide Web. Very good.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with thin strip from stub adhering to edge of second leaf. The page is headed 'Private & Confidential', and the poem is preceded by the following note: 'I must send you the verses on the Battle of the Sunflower on "The Batsford Nondescript". A twenty-four line poem, in six four-line stanzas, on the theme of a disagreement over the naming of a specimen, between the botanist Anthony Hurt Wolley-Dod (1861-1948) and the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Sir William Turner Thiselton-Dyer (1843-1928). Penultimate stanza headed 'Wolley Dod loquitur', and last one headed 'A week later - the same loquitur'. The poem begins: 'Quoth Wolley Dod, "Dear me! how odd! | Why here's the identical flower, | Which I sent to Kew, to be named by you, | A thing quite out of your power. | It was this - it was that - and I'll eat my hat | If ever I knew such a joke, | When at last you came to give it a name | 'Twas Jerusalem Artichoke!" | Says Thiselton Dyer, "To call you a liar | Is a thing I'd scorn to do, | But my meaning is plain, if you say that again | You'll be saying what is not true!"' Redesdale's entry in the Oxford Dictionary of Biography emphasises his 'cosmopolitanism' and 'dandy's charm', and the fact that he was 'busy with translations, addresses, and pamphlets to such an extent that he seemed, after the age of sixty-five, to have turned from an amateur into a professional man of letters'.
Londres [i.e. Amsterdam, Marc-Michel Rey], 1769.
Barbier II, 188 ; Vercruysse, 1770/D1 ; Naville, D'Holbach, p. 415.
