Contemporary mottled calf-backed marbled boards, flat gilt spine with red morocco label (binding slightly rubbed; manuscript inscription on title-page; a few light spots, otherwise a very good copy). First edition of this important first-hand account by a French merchant-entrepreneur who, from 1781 onwards and with the support of the French government, undertook pioneering commercial ventures to Crimea, Russia, and Poland to develop trade between Cherson, Odessa, and Marseille. In 54 chapters, the work traces the opening of the Black Sea to non-Ottoman navigation following the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, recounts the author's missions to St. Petersburg and his dealings with the courts of Catherine II, Paul I, and Alexander I, and examines successive Franco-Russian and Franco-Ottoman commercial treaties alongside the rapid rise of Odessa as a major port. The concluding sections provide detailed practical information on customs tariffs, exchange rates, weights and measures, model trade accounts, and navigational observations for routes from Constantinople to Cherson and Taganrog. A key primary source for the commercial opening of the Black Sea in the Napoleonic era, complete with the large folding map "Carte de la Navigation Intérieure d'une grande partie de la Russie Européenne et de l'Ancienne Pologne" by Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage.
