In good condition, lightly aged, laid down on part of leaf from album, with the reverse carrying part of the frank to a letter from another unidentified individual, with free postmark from 1826. Byron's frank has the customary red-ink postmark at top right ('FREE | 8 DE 8 | 18…26'), and is laid out by him in the customary fashion: 'Portsmouth December Seven | 1826 | The Honble. Mrs. Collingwood | Hawkhurst | Kent'. Byron's signature 'Byron.', at bottom left, is only underlined, and not enclosed within the two parallel lines as required. There is a naval connection between Byron and the addressee. Collingwood House was bought by the celebrated Admiral (of Trafalgar fame) in 1816 for his daughter and her husband George Newnham. It was later the residence of astronomer Sir John Herschel.

Relation française du naufrage du HMS Wager, bâtiment de l'escadre du commodore George Anson partie de Portsmouth en août 1740 afin d'attaquer les possessions espagnoles du Pacifique. Après un passage extrêmement éprouvant du cap Horn, le Wager fit naufrage en mai 1741 sur une île désolée au large de la Patagonie. Le récit décrit la survie des rescapés, les dissensions internes, la mutinerie et les versions contradictoires livrées par les officiers et matelots revenus en Angleterre. Parmi les survivants figurait John Byron, alors enseigne de vaisseau, futur vice-amiral et grand-père du poète Lord Byron. Cette relation complète et nuance le célèbre Voyage autour du monde d'Anson, auquel elle sert explicitement de suite.

Relation de l'expédition de George Anson envoyé attaquer les possessions espagnoles pendant la guerre de l'oreille de Jenkins qui opposa la Grande-Bretagne et l'Espagne de 1739 à 1748 Son voyage dura plus de 3 ans et fut une catastrophe au niveau humain, malgré cela, il fut accueilli en héros suite à la prise du Galion « Nuestra Senora de Cabadonga » aux environs des Philippines et de ses 400 000 livres. Depuis sa première parution en langue anglaise en 1748, ce voyage célèbre mi-militaire, mi-commercial, fut constamment réédité. Son texte, préparé par Walter, fut jugé de si mauvaise qualité avant l'impression que l'on demanda à Benjamin Robins, le mathématicien de l'expédition, de le réécrire entièrement ; le nom du chapelain (Walter) est quand même resté sur la page de titre. Quant aux cartes et planches, elles surpassaient à l'époque en qualité et précision, et de loin, tout ce qui avait été réalisé dans ce genre pour les livres de voyages, elle consiste en une grande carte en 13 belles cartes gravées et en 21 grandes gravures dépliantes illustrant les épisodes et découvertes majeures de l'expédition. Relation française du naufrage du HMS Wager, bâtiment de l'escadre du commodore George Anson partie de Portsmouth en août 1740 afin d'attaquer les possessions espagnoles du Pacifique. Après un passage extrêmement éprouvant du cap Horn, le Wager fit naufrage en mai 1741 sur une île désolée au large de la Patagonie. Le récit décrit la survie des rescapés, les dissensions internes, la mutinerie et les versions contradictoires livrées par les officiers et matelots revenus en Angleterre. Parmi les survivants figurait John Byron, alors enseigne de vaisseau, futur vice-amiral et grand-père du poète Lord Byron. Cette relation complète et nuance le célèbre Voyage autour du monde d'Anson, auquel elle sert explicitement de suite. Ouvrage compilé à partir des journaux de John Bulkeley, John Cummins, Alexander Campbell, Isaac Morris et d'un auteur demeuré anonyme.

Relation de l'expédition de George Anson envoyé attaquer les possessions espagnoles pendant la guerre de l'oreille de Jenkins qui opposa la Grande-Bretagne et l'Espagne de 1739 à 1748. Son voyage dura plus de 3 ans et fut une catastrophe au niveau humain, malgré cela, il fut accueilli en héros suite à la prise du Galion « Nuestra Senora de Cabadonga » aux environs des Philippines et de ses 400 000 livres. Depuis sa première parution en langue anglaise en 1748, ce voyage célèbre mi-militaire, mi-commercial, fut constamment réédité. Son texte, préparé par Walter, fut jugé de si mauvaise qualité avant l'impression que l'on demanda à Benjamin Robins, le mathématicien de l'expédition, de le réécrire entièrement ; le nom du chapelain (Walter) est quand même resté sur la page de titre. Quant aux cartes et planches, elles surpassaient à l'époque en qualité et précision, et de loin, tout ce qui avait été réalisé dans ce genre pour les livres de voyages, elle consiste en une grande carte en 13 belles cartes gravées et en 21 grandes gravures dépliantes illustrant les épisodes et découvertes majeures de l'expédition.
