Anslinger led the Federal Bureau of Narcotics from 1930 to 1962 and linked marijuana to derangement, insanity, military insubordination, and social breakdown. "Anslinger's sincerity as a relentless drug-prohibition advocate and enforcer has never been questioned, but his skilful bureaucratic empire-building inspired much of the 'war' on drugs that has gripped the nation and nurtured the gigantic US drug-war establishment ever since" (ANB).
