Small 8vo hardback, original blue cloth gilt with mounted colour vignette of bird to upper board. 155 pages plus [20] pages of publisher's adverts. Coloured frontis. Slight lean to spine, head of spine slightly frayed, tail crumpled, slight wear to corners, two 19th century ownership inscriptions, pages foxed otherwise a clean and sound copy of a scarce item.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. (4.6 x 3.6 inches). 8pp, plus publishers green wraps, printed in black to the front panel with title, publisher and woodcut illustration. Unsewn but with the later addition of a pin to keep it all together. Each page with one or two, a total of ten, woodcuts and text printed below. A few creases to the page edges but overall a very good example of this rare edition. ---- No copy of this edition listed on Worldcat or Copac. ---- Fairburn was located at this address from 1820 to 1842.- P.A.H. Brown. London publishers and printers. p. 65. ---- The Osborne collection in Toronto has a similar edition, dated 1820 and published by Fairburn, that it records as being illustrated by Smeeton.

Both title pages present and have an engraved vignette to each, the first volume has a masturbating faun. Handsomely bound in full vellum gilt, red lettering piece, slightly rubbed. prelims lightly foxed, pages browned otherwise a very clean and sound copy. Nerciat (17391800) was a soldier, poet, composer, playwright and novelist, and a spy under both the Ancien Régime and the Republic. He travelled to countries throughout Europe during the course of his busy, sometimes turbulent career, and spent most of the last two years of his life in prison after being arrested by French forces in Italy in 1798, probably for his activities as a double agent. He is mostly remembered today for his libertine writings, including Félicia, ou mes frédaines (Félicia, or My Frolics) in 1775, Le diable au corps (Devil in the Flesh) in 1789, and Les Aphrodites.

The Sefer haHinnuch was written in 13th century Spain and now "a popular classic in our Torah heritage largely because the author finds an understandable reason, benefit or purpose in just about every mitzvah." Zustand: VG. One volume. 6-1/2 X 8 inches. Fully ink manuscript. (There is a slight possiblity that this a diary of the illustrator John Leech . Title page gives place as Islington and date as 1848 (other near year dates as 1851 on one newspaper clipping) which is consistent with Leech's location in that year but there is no name given for the writer of the diary.) There are 106 pages of ink handwritten text with 6 hand drawings, some in ink and some in pencil ( and a pencil sketch of a man's head which is so faint as to be barely visible.) Although Leech's name does not appear anywere on the notebook, the drawing of two boys on p. 19 is initialled by Leech and the style of all the drawings is the same as published drawings by Leech. Perhaps the drawings are just very successful copies of printed drawings by Leech. A brief perusal of all his known drawings by Leech did not match any seen in this diary. The handwriting is possibly not all by the same person but it is hard to tell. Several of the drawings have a small note nearby indicating that they appeared in Punch. Numerous newspaper clippings, almost all about Graphology and how handwriting can reveal writer's personality, are laid in. 4to., 3/4 red leather binding. Binding is very secure. Text is clean and the writing is neat but often, though not always, it is very difficult to read due to excessively squiggly notation. Album exterior is worn. Internally VG with secure binding, hinges not cracked, no tears. Unique and interesting. Pictures available on request.
