Hardcover. 8vo. Rebound in teal green cloth with gilt spine lettering. 275pp. Very good. Modern binding near fine, while internally tight and moderately, lightly age toned throughout. Ex-library, with very few and discreet markings and rectangular inkstamped "Young Men's Library Association Dubuque, Iowa" lightly inkstamped on t…itle page and last text page. A tight and nice first edition, despite faint ex-library markings. Annie Fields (1834-1915), who compiled this shortly after Fields' death, was widow of this publisher, editor, poet and lecturer (1817-81) and herself an author of some renown. Since a signed copy of this posthumously-published collection is impossible, here's the next best thing: Tipped to front flyleaf is a clipped (4½" X 7/8") letter closing, a hurried "Truly Yours J.T. Fields" and a few partial words above penned in his usual purple ink. The volume closes with a poem written specifically for it by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, "Auf Wiedersehen," which appears here (pp. 274-75) for the first time.

All items are in very good condition. American author and social reformer who was influential in encouraging the careers of up-and-coming writers such as Sarah Orne Jewett, Mary Freeman, and Emma Lazarus. She was equally at home with great and established figures including Ralph Waldo Emerson and Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose biography she compiled. Her closest friend was Sarah Orne Jewett, a novelist and story writer with whom she lived for quite some time. Their closest friends included Cather, Dickens, Kipling, Tennyson, Twain, Longfellow, Whittier, Hawthorne, Stowe, Trollope, and the Brownings. In keeping with her philanthropist ideals, Adams donated her complete estate to charity.
