Paris, Paix et Liberté, n.d., c. 1953.Near fine. Scarce in libraries, we can find no copies on WorldCat as named items, though surely one or two are in vertical files without separate collation. A redux of the text and captions roughly translated follows: " The Communist Party ordered P. Picasso's portrait of Stalin, in the canon of Social Realism. We have the opportunity to introduce to you some sketches, which may belong to the Master. We present them to the public so thatthey can appreciated the efforts that led to this work of the Great Art. Here is a completed portraitin the ordered frame. / Eternal glory to the genius Stalin". The illustrations depict parody Cubist portraits of Stalin by Picasso, who as a Party member had produced a charcoal sketch of the dictator depicted as a young man for the Party organ, The final portrait has transformd into a standard hero like photograph of the Man of Iron as head chorister of the people surrounded by communist emblems. Annenkov and Paix et Liberté were rabidly anti-communist but, as with this little ephemeron, they were antis with great wit and style.
