In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Publication: London, J.M. Dent & Co. (and New York, E.P. Dutton & Co.), 1906 Formatting: 8vo, pp. viii, 185. Condition Report: Very Good. Bound in handsome contemporary half-leather over marbled boards, the exterior presents beautifully with sharp corners, clean raised bands, and bright, unoxidised… gilt tooling and lettering to the spine. The dark leather remains supple, exhibiting only the faintest signs of shelf-wear to the extremities, while the marbled paper boards and matching text-block edges retain their vibrant, swirling hues. Internally, the hinges remain remarkably sound and the binding is entirely tight. The preliminary leaves and free endpapers show scattered foxing (a standard occurrence in the paper stocks of this era) which greatly diminishes towards the main text block. The internal pages are otherwise largely crisp and clean, and C.E. Brock's twenty-four colour plates remain exceptionally vivid and well-preserved. Overall, a highly attractive, robust copy that has been beautifully cared for. Catalogue Note: Originally published anonymously in 1851, Anne Manning's historical novel found renewed popularity in the Edwardian era, culminating in this beautifully realised edition by J.M. Dent. This particular copy has been elevated by a sophisticated bespoke half-leather binding, complete with matching marbled boards, endpapers, and page edges, suggesting it was specially bound for a private library or commissioned as a premium presentation piece. The edition is particularly notable for its twenty-four rich colour plates by Charles Edmund (C.E.) Brock, one of the most celebrated and prolific illustrators of the period. While standard cloth-bound copies of this Dent edition appear on the market with some regularity, examples housed in such fine, contemporary leather bindings are scarce and highly desirable for collectors of Brockâs work, bespoke bindings, or Tudor-themed literature. Written as a masterful faux diary, The Household of Sir Thomas More offers a charming and poignant reimagining of the domestic life of the famous Tudor statesman, as seen through the eyes of his beloved eldest daughter, Margaret Roper. Blending rigorous historical research with sensitive character studies, Anne Manning paints a vivid portrait of a household steeped in Renaissance learning, intellectual warmth, and profound faith, set just before the encroaching shadows of King Henry VIII's political and religious upheavals. Brought beautifully to life by C.E. Brock's evocative colour illustrations, this work serves as a captivating window into the private life of one of history's most famous families. C.E. Brock (illustrator).
