Although there were a number of examples of artists designing manufactured and hand-made fabrics during the late nineteenth century, none really succeeded in the production of 'art for the people'. Even William Morris' strong socialist commitments could not prevent him from producing for a relatively small elite. Raoul Dufy was the first twentieth century artist to become seriously and successfully involved in producing designs for textiles. His work influenced and encouraged many artists and textile companies in Britain, and on the Continent, during the 1920s and '30s, but it was during the 1940s that this movement really flowered. In post-war Britain the growth of the welfare state and search for a democratic art form accessible to all made textiles an ideal medium. The involvement of leading British and French.
