In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. Salzburg, 1919-1920., 1919-1920. Good. - A series of 4 autograph letters penned in German by the Austrian writer Hermann Bahr addressed to the noted Viennese lawyer Dr. Paul Klemperer regarding contractual problems his wife, Wagnerian dramatic soprano Anna von Mildenburg, is having. In a letter dated May 21, 1919 from Salzburg, Arenberg Castle, penned on 2 sides of 6-7/8 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide cream paper with an attached blank leaf, Bahr notes that the director Hans Brewer has already notified him of the situation and asks Dr. Klemperer to take charge of the case on behalf of his wife. She had contracted to sing ten times for a fee of 2,000 Kronen per performance. He states that she did indeed sing ten times but received only 13,000 Kronen instead of 20,000. He mentions that he and his wife have all the receipts. Signed "Hermann Bahr". The pages are slightly soiled and folded vertically & horizontally. Very good. On June 6 Bahr writes from Salzburg thanking Dr. Klemperer for his letter but says that the attached power of attorney form is missing. He goes on to say that as soon as they receive it, he and his wife will sign it and forward it to him. Penned on 5-1/2 inch high by 3-5/8 inch wide postcard paper addressed and postmarked on the verso. The letter is signed in full "Hermann Bahr". The paper is slightly toned, else very good. In a third letter dated July 2, Bahr expresses his frustration that the Hofratliche Verwaltung (the bureaucrats running the Vienna Court Opera) did not know that his wife was re-engaged by the new directors for the entire 1919 season. He goes on to say that his wife agrees to a 15% compensation. Signed "Hermann Bahr'. Penned on 2 sides of 6-7/8 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide paper with an attached blank leaf. The letter is folded, else very good. In a brief letter dated October 6, 1919 Bahr sends the the signature of his wife (not included here) and asks Klemperer to send further reports on financial details. Signed in full "Hermann Bahr". The letter is penned on 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide paper and is folded horizontally. Very good. In addition to the 4 letters, there is a picture postcard of Saanenmoser, Switzerland dated September 5, 1930 and postmarked from Bern. Bahr expresses thanks for Dr. Klemperer's kind greetings and notes that they will see him soon in Vienna. The edges are lightly chipped and the postcard is folded in half. Good. The Austrian writer, playwright, director and critic Hermann Bahr (1863-1934) studied philosophy, political economy, philology and law. He discovered an interest in literature and art while living in Paris for a while and began working as an art critic upon his return to Berlin and Vienna. In 1890 Bahr became an associate editor of the Berliner Freie Buhne and then the Deutsche Zeitung, publishing a collection of short stories "Fin de Siecle" in 1891. Six of the stories were determined to be obscene by Prussian authorities and Bahr was fined. He covered the Panama Canal scandal that same year and interviewed Emil Zola. Bahr toured several European countries in 1893 interviewing several eminent figures about antisemitism. He published Die Zeit (The Times) and was the editor of several periodicals. Bahr worked with Max Reinhardt in 1894 as a director at Berlin's Deutsches Theater. An active member of the Austrian avant-garde, Bahr was a spokesman for the literary group Young Vienna. A protege of the composer and conductor Gustav Mahler, Anna von Mildenburg (1872-1947) was a prominent Wagnerian soprano. In addition to her studies at Vienna's Conservatory of Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, von Mildenburg studied voice privately with Cosima Wagner and Mahler and had an affair with the composer which lasted until 1897. Mahler took her to the Vienna State Opera in 1898 where she became one of the great stars during his tenure as music director. She went on to perform at the Vienna State Opera until 1917, returning again in 1919-1920 where she was praised for her role as Isolde in Wagner's opera "Tristan und Isolde", a role that in 1903 she sang under Mahler. Von Mildenburg married the celebrated writer Hermann Bahr in 1909 and after appearing as a guest artist at the Zalzburg Festival from 1922 to 1927, went on to teach singing and voice. Lilian Benningsen, Fritz Schaetzler and Lauritz Melchior were counted among her students. Dr. Paul Klemperer (d. 1960) was a lawyer and writer known in theatrical circles. He obtained a Doctorate of Law from the University of Vienna and co-authored an Austrian law creating a labor union for actors. Klemperer came to the U.S. in 1938. Hans Brewer was a Tenor and from 1919 was a stage director at the Vienna State Opera. …
