Ottimo esemplare di questa monografia dedicata all'opera artistica ai quattro cavalli di San Marco analizzati non solo dal punto artistico ma anche fisico, chimico e prospettico. I Cavalli di San Marco rappresentano i quattro cavalli bronzei, originariamente parte di una q…uadriga in trionfo, oggi posta nella Basilica di San Marco a Venezia dal XIII secolo, ed un tempo appartenenti all'ippodromo di Costantinopoli. La realizzazione di questa scultura unica pervenutaci dall'epoca antica, potrebbe risalire all'epoca romana (alcuni la datano dalla metà del II secolo al III secolo d.C.) o più probabilmente a quella ellenistica (comunque non prima del II secolo a.C. secondo l'analisi al carbonio), sebbene alcuni autori moderni la datino al IV secolo a.C., attribuendola allo scultore greco Lisippo. L'analisi dell'opera suggerisce che fu realizzata con almeno il 96,67% di rame, non quindi di bronzo. L'alto contenuto di stagno avrebbe incrementato la temperatura di fusione fino a 1200-1300 °C. La grande purezza del rame fu scelta per dare una maggior e sufficiente doratura al mercurio.[3] Questo metodo produttivo suggerisce che la produzione dell'opera sia avvenuta in epoca romana, piuttosto che in quella ellenistica.[4] I quattro cavalli hanno un'altezza massima di 238 cm (131 cm è quella al garrese), lunghi 252 cm e pesano tra gli 8,5 e i 9 quintali ciascuno.Prima edizione.
