Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. First Edition. (decorated/illustrated cloth with gilt highlights; no dust jacket) [a sound copy, still attractive despite some external soiling and light surface deterioration, modest bumping to corner of rear cover, discoloration to endpapers, school prize label on front pastedown (see Notes)]. Victorian-Era historical novel with a 17th-century setting and heavy religious content. This is a later edition (the book itself is undated; the 1895 date comes from the British Library catalogue); the book was originally published in Edinburgh in 1870 under the title "The Diary of Nannette Dampier." The author (1827-1896) was an English schoolteacher, and is known to have written at least seven novels for a readership of young ladies, as well as various works of nonfiction, including "The Story of English Literature" and "Noble Rivers and Stories Concerning Them." What gives this copy a particular charm is that it bears a label on the front pastedown attesting to the fact that it was presented as a prize to one William Hillian by the Shettleston School Board, in recognition of his attendance during the 1895-96 term of the Tollcross Public School. (Shettleston is a former mining village, now a residential suburb in Glasgow's East End; Tollcross is an area just south of Shettleston. It is unclear to me from my research whether Tollcross Public School still exists as such.) One wonders if young Mr. Hillian was embarrassed to be given a book that was so clearly intended for a female audience.…
