Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A fascinating and almost fantastic chapter in the history of Virgil's reception concerns the 'Thirteenth Book of the Aeneid' written at Pavia in 1428 by Maphaeus Vegius, then a mere lad of twenty-two. For a century and a half after the invention of printing, this book was invariably placed alongside the Aeneid as though an integral part of it, but much more rarely thereafter and now it is seldom available in print. In it the Rutulians surrender to Aeneas; Latinus returns Turnus' body to his father, who performs the burial with due ceremony; Aeneas marries Lavinia and founds a city named after her; he succeeds eventually to Latinus' kingdom; and in the end receives from his mother Venus the gift of apotheosis among the stars. This edition, originally published in 1930, has a substantial introduction, Latin text faced by the English translation of Thomas Twyne (1584), Sebastian Brant's six illustrative woodcuts (1502) and Gavin Hamilton's translation into Scots dialect (1553). Bibliography is provided and succinct annotation, mostly devoted to Vegius' echoes of Virgil's own poetry.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, number 91 of 150 copies for private distribution, signed by the author, printer, and Estelle Doheny, with the latter's presentation slip tipped onto the front endpapers (as issued). The essay was written to accompany the exhibition at Mills College of the illuminated manuscript of the Aeneid produced by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, which was purchased by Doheny in 1932. Brinton (1887-1969), a classical scholar and member of Mills College's School of Fine Arts, wrote this short publication. It was finely printed by Ward Ritchie (1905-1996), at the time an important figure in the fine printing culture of Southern California, for Doheny, one of the greatest collectors of the 20th century. Provenance: Given to Stephen C. Massey by Monsignor Francis J. Weber as a gift of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Quarto. Title page printed within elaborate foliate border, vignette of Burne-Jones's "Venus appearing to Aeneas before Carthage", two facsimile pages of the manuscript. Original parchment-backed white boards, spine and front cover lettered in red, fore and bottom edges uncut. In the publisher's slipcase, limitation number pencilled in manuscript at head. Lettering on spine a touch rubbed, else a fine copy.
