Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The cannabinoid system plays a central role in a wide variety of physiological functions that touch upon cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, immune, and nervous systems. Cannabinoids also play a central role in developmental physiology, management of p…ain, and shaping of human behaviour. Recent movements towards legalization of marijuana use have bolstered scientific interest in the cannabinoid field and led to research efforts that would unveil multi-faceted effects and mechanisms of cannabinoid presence in different organs and at various stages of development. This book summarizes the recent advances in the field of cannabinoid research at multiple levels of resolution. It spans from systemic effects of cannabinoids on development, physiological function, and prevalent pathophysiological conditions to mechanisms that govern cannabinoid interaction with their relevant protein targets at atomic resolution. This book will be of interest to a specialized audience in the fields of biochemistry, pharmacology and developmental biology but alsoto a wider readership with interest in general physiology and cannabinoid signalling in biological systems.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this book, renowned scientists describe how cholesterol interacts with various proteins. Recent progress made in the high-resolution visualization of cholesterol-protein interactions using crystallography and cryogenic electron microscopy has subs…tantially advanced the knowledge of critical features. These features enable specific recognition of the cholesterol molecule by proteins, a process that was built on earlier studies using binding assays, computational modeling and site-directed mutagenesis. Direct Mechanisms in Cholesterol Modulation of Protein Function offers comprehensive insights into the current understanding of cholesterol-driven modulation of protein function via direct sensing. Its nine chapters are organized into two distinct parts. In the first part, the chapters introduce the reader to the general characteristics of cholesterol binding sites in proteins. This part starts with a tour into common cholesterol recognition motifs, followed by an overview of the major classes of steroid-binding proteins. It then continues with two chapters that present a comprehensive analysis of molecular and structural characteristics of cholesterol binding sites in transmembrane and soluble protein domains. In the second part of the book, examples of cholesterol binding sites and consequences of specific cholesterol recognition for protein function are presented for G protein-coupled receptors, ion channels and cholesterol-transporting proteins. The book is valuable for undergraduate and graduate students in biochemistry and nutrition, as well as basic science and medical researchers with a keen interest in the biophysical properties of cholesterol and physiological consequences of cholesterol presence in biological systems.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Misuse of psychoactive substances in the form of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, or prescribed meds, affects the entire family. Besides visible consequences, substance misuse by prospective parents has an invisible target - the progeny. While consequences of so…me substance use (such as alcohol) on embryonic and fetal development are well known, others are less studied. This book aims at summarizing recent advances in our understanding of how maternal and paternal misuse of psychoactive substances affects the progeny starting from early development and finishing with lifelong consequences. Book aims to cover current knowledge on molecular mechanisms that drive negative consequences of early developmental exposure to well-known drugs of misuse, as well as substances that are traditionally covered to a lesser extend, such as prescription medications, and caffeine. Attention is also given to trans-generational effects of drug misuse, when such misuse occurs before the conception. Lastbut not least, consequences of both maternal and paternal drug misuse are explained. Book will be of interest to a rather large community of students, researchers, and practicians, who tackle everyday challenges of prenatal drug exposure whether at the level of laboratory animal models or at the bedside and at obstetrics offices. Book will also be of value to health- and childcare professionals, as it explains lifelong consequences of prenatal exposure to drugs of misuse. Chapters in the book are contributed by renowned experts in the respective fields, from all across the globe. The overarching goal of this book is to create a comprehensive collection of articles that reflect current knowledge in the field of substance abuse and early development, and to raise the professional awareness of this critical, yet, often under-recognized issue.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this book, renowned scientists describe the role of steroid chirality and modification of lipid membrane physical properties in the modulation of G protein-coupled receptors and ion channels. The application of commonly-used technical approaches such as…mass spectrometry and nucleic magnetic resonance transfer spectroscopy for studies on cholesterol distribution and alteration of lipid bilayer characteristics is also discussed. This book offers comprehensive insights into the current understanding of cholesterol-driven modulation of protein function via mechanisms that extend beyond lipid-protein direct interactions. In the first part, the chapters introduce the reader to the use of the chemical derivatives of cholesterol as a valuable laboratory tool in the studies of cholesterol-driven modulation of protein function. In the second part, examples of cholesterol-induced changes in membrane physical characteristics are presented and discussed in light of their multifaceted contribution to the effect of cholesterol on protein function. The book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well as basic science and medical researchers with a keen interest in the biophysical properties of cholesterol and physiological consequences of cholesterol presence in biological systems.
