In quegli anni il libro, pubblicato dall'eretico Feltrinelli e attaccato dai critici di sinistra, era diventato un enorme successo editoriale. Tra dubbi e dissidi, gli esponenti culturali del PCI si risolsero a cambiare strategia appoggiando in pieno il progetto di Visconti: il "conte rosso" era pronto a trasformare il romanzo della sconfitta storica ed esistenziale di un aristocratico nel racconto del tradimento degli ideali risorgimentali e del soffocamento cruento delle prime lotte di classe. L'impresa fu titanica per i mezzi economici impiegati e per la battaglia di idee che accompagnò prima l'uscita del romanzo e poi la lavorazione del film. "Operazione Gattopardo" ricostruisce il dibattito critico-ideologico che si agitò dietro i riflettori e che infiammò l'ambiente cinematografico, quello letterario e quello politico, fra liti epocali, premi letterari combattuti fino all'ultimo voto, "contrordini" di partito, contratti stracciati, scene tagliate e dimenticate.
