Boethius composed the De Consolatione Philosophiae in the sixth century AD whilst awaiting death under torture, condemned on a charge of treason which he protested was manifestly unjust. Though a convinced Christian, in detailing the true end of life which is the soul's knowledge of God, he console…d himself not with Christian precepts but with the tenets of Greek philosophy. This work dominated the intellectual world of the Middle Ages; writers as diverse as Thomas Aquinas, Jean de Meun, and Dante were inspired by it. In England it was rendered in to Old English by Alfred the Great, into Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer, and later Queen Elizabeth I made her own translation. The circumstances of composition, the heroic demeanour of the author, and the 'Menippean' texture of part prose, part verse have combined to exercise a fascination over students of philosophy and literature ever since. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius, auch Boëthius geschrieben; * um 480/485; im Zeitraum von 524 bis 526 entweder in Pavia oder in Calvenzano in der heutigen Provinz Ber…gamo) war ein spätantiker römischer Gelehrter, Politiker, neuplatonischer Philosoph und Theologe. Seine Tätigkeit fiel in die Zeit der Herrschaft des Ostgotenkönigs Theoderich, unter dem er hohe Ämter bekleidete. Er geriet in den Verdacht, eine gegen die Ostgotenherrschaft gerichtete Verschwörung von Anhängern des oströmischen Kaisers zu begünstigen. Daher wurde er verhaftet, als Hochverräter verurteilt und hingerichtet. Boethius bemühte sich, ein ehrgeiziges Bildungsprogramm zu verwirklichen. Er beabsichtigte, sämtliche Werke Platons und des Aristoteles als Grundtexte der griechischen philosophischen und wissenschaftlichen Literatur in lateinischer Übersetzung zugänglich zu machen und zu kommentieren. Daneben verfasste er Lehrbücher. Damit wollte er den Kernbestand der überlieferten Bildungsgüter für die Zukunft sichern, da die Griechischkenntnisse im lateinischsprachigen Westen Europas stark abgenommen hatten. Überdies hatte er vor, anschließend die Übereinstimmung zwischen Platon und Aristoteles aufzuzeigen, die er gemäß der damals vorherrschenden Auffassung annahm. Wegen seines vorzeitigen Todes blieb das gewaltige Vorhaben zwar unvollendet, doch wurde er zum wichtigsten Vermittler der griechischen Logik, Mathematik und Musiktheorie an die lateinischsprachige Welt des Mittelalters bis ins 12. Jahrhundert. Die stärkste Nachwirkung erzielte seine während der Haftzeit entstandene Schrift Consolatio philosophiae (Der Trost der Philosophie"), in der er seine Vorstellungen zur Ethik und Metaphysik darlegte.
