Das ab 1. Oktober 1957 bis zum 27. November 1961 fast durchgängig rezeptfrei verkaufte und für schwangere Frauen ausdrücklich empfohlene Beruhigungs- und Schlafmittel 'Contergan' (Wirkstoff: Thalidomid) der Grünenthal GmbH in Stolberg konnte bei der Einnahme in der frühen Schwangerschaft Schädigungen in der Wachstumsentwicklung des Kindes hervorrufen. Durch die Einnahme von Contergan kam es zu einer Häufung von schweren Fehlbildungen (Dysmelien) oder gar dem Fehlen (Amelie) von Gliedmaßen und Organen bei Neugeborenen. Weltweit wurden etwa 5.000 bis 10.000 betroffene Kinder geboren; zudem kam es zu einer unbekannten Zahl von Totgeburten . . . (s. wikipedia).
