In good condition, lightly aged, with slight sunning to first page, and traces of mount on blank final page. Folded once. Sig…ned 'Geneviève Ward' (note the accent). The letter relates to the 1889 revival at the London Opera Comique of the role which made her famous, Stephanie, Marquise de Mohrivar, in Merivale and Grove's 1879 play 'Forget Me Not'. Begins: 'Dear Mr Broadley / Have you received your stall for Forgetmenot at the Comique today 3 o'clock? if not may I hope that you will come & I will leave the ticket in an envelope for you at the Box Office.' She points out that he told her that he had not seen the piece, '& I should be so pleased if you will come & see [me] as Stephanie'.

Delormel did not write "The Boulanger" March ("En Revenat de la revue") nor did he write "Père la Victoire" but I dont say he didn't publish them.' Finck attributes the first to 'M.… Desormes (the Conductor of the Folies Bergere Paris up to the time of his death about a year ago)', and the second to 'Louis Ganne who composed "Lorraine" March, also that hackneyed Mazurka the name of which I forget for the moment which goes like this: - | [Finck has written a line of musical score here]'. In a postscript he states that 'The "Star" scintillator also erred thusly in the work that has gone.' The third page carries a humorous remark attributed by Finck to Cuvier, regarding 'the supposed definition of a lobster'. An extremely popular figure in London theatrical and musical circles, Finck was the musical director of the Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue. His 'In the Shadows' was one of the last tunes played as RMS Titanic went down.

Pink paper slip 115x110mm, perforated to the left hand edge where it was removed from a book, printed on both sides, ink stamped No. 2053 with ms entries to the front. A very rare survivor, creased with closed tears and minor loss. This was issued by E.M. Lawson on behalf of AIOC's Shipping Manager, to… seaman B. [Bernard Michael] Gosden, rank 3/R.O. [Radio Officer], SS Baroda, allowing him to enter Abadan from 3 December 1942. T&Cs state this is non-transferable, valid for one voyage, to be collected on board prior to sailing and returned to the Shipping Department for cancellation, with loss to be reported in writing in order to receive a replacement. The SS Baroda was a British India Steam Navigation Company cargo and passenger liner engaged in the Slow Gulf Mail Service. Earlier in 1942, it took part in the evacuation of Burma. It was one of many ships destroyed in the Bombay Docks Explosion of April 1944. (Ref. P&O Heritage, "Ship Fact Sheet: Baroda (1911)").

Thirty-seven lines of text. Addressed to 'Octavian Blewitt Esq.' and signed 'G. L. M. Strauss'. He begins by describing his situation: 'I venture to s…olicit your kind friendly advice. You know that two years ago a well nigh fatal illness compelled me to leave The Charterhouse on an out pension of a guinea a week - an exchange which I bet to assure you I have no reason or wish to regret.' During his eighteen months of illness he 'received only nine pounds a quarter - fifty-four pounds in all - from the institution. Even the kindness of my friends could not, then, altogether shield me from incurring some pecuniary liability to enable me to live through this period of more than usual expense'. Since his recovery he has written his reminiscences, which have 'yielded me only seventy pounds for the copyright'. The letter continues with further news, and he ends by asking Blewitt whether he should appeal to the committee of the Royal Literary Fund.

Unfortunately others you want I have only of a private character, & I do not like cutting off the signatures.' He is sending those of J. E. Redmond, Thos Healy, Arthur O'Connor and T. D. Sullivan (the last 'unsigned but vouched by me'). If she is not 'tired of us' in a year's time and wishes to send an amended list, he will 'have another look through my papers'.

He begins by explaining that he has waited until after the previous day's meeting of the Association to write to her, so that he can convey 'the tributes to your late husband's memory which… I felt sure would be shown at this gathering of his friends and colleagues'. 'Mr Frederick Austin as chairman referred to the great loss which we all felt in the passing of Herman Finck, and spoke of his great qualities both as a friend and as a musician. At the conclusion of this, the members of the Association present stood for some moments in silent tribute to his memory.' He concludes by adding his own 'sense of personal loss'. It meant a great deal to him that Finck 'more than once went out of his way to speak words of encouragement' to Collinson in his 'very early days as a touring conductior'. The word 'Answered' is written at the head of the second page. See Collinson's entry in the Oxford DNB. Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last pieces played by the orchestra on the Titanic.

The document is a printed circular, the only manuscript being Marsden's signature and the number of the day of the month. It reads: 'Admiralty Office, [7] July, 1800. / Sir, / I AM commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to send you herewith a Printed Copy of His Majesty's Order in Council dated the 28th of May last, in respect to the Books hereafter to be made out whenever any of His Majesty's Ships shall come in course of Pay, or be directed to be paid off, and in like manner when Men are discharged by Pay Lists; and to signify their Lordships direction to you to cause the Regulations therein pointed out to be adopted and carried into execution in future. / I am, / Sir, / Your very humble Servant, / [Wm Marsden]'.

The 31st were one of the most heavily engaged units of the conflict, seeing action at Mudki, Ferozeshah, Aliwal, and Sobraon. Scarce with just two locations traced, BL and Boston Public L…ibrary, unrecorded at auction. Vivid vignettes from the battle front are set within the context of a diary account of an uneventful voyage back from Calcutta to Gravesend. Cleveland opens on 23 October 1846, "weather continues fine and the wind steady", reminiscing of Moodkee, "the first battle in which I had even been engaged, I have often since endeavoured to imagine what my feelings were on that occasion but the hurry and confusion of that Action prevented the exercise of thought". One thing remains clear in his memory, "So confident were our Officers and men that the Sikh Army was composed of nothing but a rebel mob, that they did not believe they would hazard an engagement. this entire ignorance of the Sikh Army, it is wonderful that all were alike involved, even the Governor and Commander in Chief, each of whom, it should fairly be supposed, ought to have been possessed of correct information on so important a subject". Of Ferozeshah he recalls the "lurid flames" of the burning Sikh camp "gleaming through the darkness, diffusing sufficient light to make the horrors of our situation more apparent", the shot from the Sikh guns falling "among us by far to thick and fast to be agreeable". The situation only saved by what Cleveland - along with Sikh commander Tej Singh - read as the Commander in Chief's order for the cavalry to make a "false charge", which was in fact the withdrawal of the Horse Artillery desperately short of ammunition to Ferozepur to resupply while under cavalry escort. At Aliwal the 31st were on the extreme right of the British line, "When we had arrived within a short distance of the village, under heavy fire from the enemy, who were waving their swords and cutting a great variety of menacing capers in front of us, General Smith galloped up, and said 'take that village boys, and carry it along with you', when the whole regiment broke into a rapid double, which they did not abate until they had cleared the village, captured the guns upon its left, and caused the whole of the enemy's left flank to run for dear life. We now quietly took possession of the whole of their camp equipage, ammunition and stores; and having amply supplied ourselves. we turned in for the night, near the banks of the Sutlej". And so to Sobraon, "At 9 A. M. the battle had reached its warmest point - shot and shell were then whizzing through the air in rapid succession. on their fearful missions of mischief. from the muzzles of 150 pieces of ordnance - about half past 9, a low rumbling sound was heard, resembling distant thunder, which was caused by the report of musquetry - as the infantry ad passed the Enemy's breastworks. thus concluded the most severe contest in the annals of Indian warfare, and not a second to any fought in Europe, with the exception of Waterloo". Following the ratification of the Treaty of Lahore, the 31st marched to Calcutta and embarked for home, Cleveland composing this very personal and telling NCO's witness to world-changing events while under weigh. Wraps rubbed and soiled with some minor chips and splits at the edges, no loss of text, creases to the corners; pale toning and some finger-soiling to the text; but a well preserved copy, very good.
