Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. In the romantic opening chapters two lovely, warm-hearted, and innocent young girls are discovered against the background of Jane Austen's nineteenth-century England, that wealthy and fashionable England which now it takes something of a magic touch to evoke. You are irresistibly drawn to these artless heroines; you want them to be happy; they are so charming and so innocent. But as you fall more and more in love with them there suddenly appear premonitions of danger, and with surpassing skill the story changes from swift-flowing romance to a tale of terror and horror worthy of Poe. The ultimate triumph of virtue and dignity, the overthrow of one of the most murderously evil forces in literature, make this an enthralling and satisfying tale. Condition: Boards have some shelf wear, square corners some bumping to head and foot of spine. Pages are clean with light age tanning, some foxing to page edges. Dust jacket has light edge chipping, 1 tear on back toward top.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. New York: Random House, 1946. Book Club Edition. Hardcover. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket, with light wear to the book and a few small chips and short closed tears to the jacket. Prior owner's name on FEP. Comes with archival-quality mylar dust jacket protector. Octavo, 304 pages. A Gothic revenge tale set in 19th-century Europe, following two orphaned girls who fall into the clutches of sinister villains before turning the tables in violent retribution. The book was first published in Denmark in 1944 under the title "Gengældelsens Veje" ("The Ways of Retribution") and translated into English in 1946. The book appeared under the pseudonym Pierre Andrézel, though it is now known to have been written by Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen), the author of "Out of Africa" and "Seven Gothic Tales." Blixen wrote the novel during the German occupation of Denmark in World War II. She later described it as a diversionary pastiche, something she composed quickly for amusement and possible income, though scholars also read it as an indirect expression of her wartime fears and longing for justice. The novel stands apart from the rest of her work for its lurid Gothic plotting and its commercial tone. In terms of her oeuvre, "The Angelic Avengers" is the fourth book she published in English, following "Seven Gothic Tales" [1934], "Out of Africa" [1937], and "Winter's Tales" [1942]. Critical reception at the time was mixed some admired its energy while others dismissed it as melodramatic but it has since gained interest as the odd book out in Blixen s bibliography, showing her experimenting with genre fiction and themes of innocence, corruption, and retribution in a more direct register.
