L¿ancien avocat américain, établi à Menton, collecte, auprès de divers informateurs de Menton, Roquebrune et Sospel, un trésor de contes traditionnels en dialecte provençal qüil transcrit scrupuleusement : « Les contes suivants ont été recueillis de la bouche des gens du pays. J¿ai pris toutes les précautions pour n¿avoir que des récits traditionnels. J¿aurai voulu faire imprimer, en même temps, les textes originaux dans leur dialecte, mais le travail aurait été long, pénible [.] J¿ai cherché dans les traductions surtout la fidélité, ce qui expliquera quelques imperfections de style et même de fond. Je n¿ai voulu ni ajouter ni retrancher, craignant de modifier la signification, et de perdre le cachet populaire qui constitue une garantie d¿origine » (extrait de la Préface).Voilà une belle corbeille de contes, magiques et fantastiques, qui amuseront, surprendront ou raviront tous ceux qui ont conservé un peu de cette âme d¿enfant qui sait recréer l¿émerveillement.James Bruyn Andrews, né à New York (1842-1909), avocat, sa santé délicate l¿amène bientôt en Europe du Sud. Il sera consul à Valence (Espagne), il se mariera à Pau et s¿installera définitivement en 1871 à Menton. Membre de la Société des lettres, sciences et arts des Alpes-Maritimes, il s¿intéresse passionnément aux traditions populaires de la Côte d¿Azur, effectue des collectages et publie divers ouvrages sur le sujet, dont, en 1892, les Contes ligures recueillis entre Menton et Gênes (dans la collection de Contes populaires de toutes les Nations). …
