In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Since the 1940s, there has been an explosion of writings, both scientific and nonscientific, about the question of 'identity' and what it means to be an individual in today's world. This book examines sociological perspectives on identity in order to illuminate the perennial problem of defining the human person, and to pose an alternative definition of identity based on it being socially constructed. Beginning with a review of previous studies of identity, the authors present a set of propositions for organizing the wide range of uses of the term, and for arriving at an adequate definition of it. Identity is then analysed in two contexts: gender identity, linked to present bodies; and prenatal and postmortem identities, linked to future and past bodies. Whereas gender identity reveals the powerful but breakable link between body type and identity, prenatal and postmortem identities illustrate the symbolic reality and partial independence of identity from any corporeal existence. This is an innovative and insightful study which will appeal to all those concerned with understanding the nature of human identity.

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First printing. Softcover volume, measuring approximately 6.25" x 9.25", is in near fine condition, with minor scratch to mid-section of rear cover. Binding is sound. Interior is clean and bright. xviii/318 pages. "The book moves from a broad-brush characterization of modern society to a brief sketch of original contributions by sociologists and social philosophers who did not think with their heads in the clouds, but who struggled with the obvious and common-sensical realities of life as a key for making some sense out of what it means to be human. Motivated by their efforts, one of the original contributions of this book would be for each of us to join them in their quest by analyzing and interpreting our own everyday lives. In a profound sense, here is a do-it-yourself book. It is only when the realization strikes each of us that it is his or her own everyday life which is the object of analysis and discussion that the aim of the book hits home. The central idea for linking the text of our lives with the text of the book is biography, As we develop the idea of biography, we learn to interpret our lives as continual and everyday creations within the structures and meanings of our modern society.".
